Sorry to hi-jack, but I may be doing a similar job on the girlfriends GTI. So as far as method goes;

1. Clean off all dirt and dust with brake cleaner and spirits
2. Wire brush then sand to remove all loose paint and leave a clean, rough surface for the paint to bond
3. Paint first coat and leave for 24 hours to set properly. Apply layers until a smooth finish is obtained

Anything I've missed?

Why would you wait 24 hrs after first coat before applying additional ones?

Anything I've missed?

I literally painted my calipers last night and found this thread this morning. I used spray paint as it gives a more even finish.

Steps as follows:
1) Apply brake cleaner and leave to penetrate
2) Scrape flakey paint off with flat screwdriver or wire brush and remove quick release spring from front calipers only.
3) Clean over entire surface with brillo pad
4) Sand entire brake down with sandpaper, I started with 600grit.
5) Mask over entire area and don't forget the middle of the caliper or you'll spray the discs too.
6) When you're ready to spray give it one last decent spray with brake cleaner so there's no lingering dust.
7) Spray over with a very light coat of ted temperature resistant paint. I used 650degree paint. Remember if you put on too much it will form droplets so go light.
8) The temperature resistant paint dries very quickly and I parked my car to face the sun. Apply 2/3 coats until you're happy.
9) Start applying clear laquer spray paint to calipers. I used 4 coats of very light spray.
10) Fit the quick release brake spring back into the front caliper. Do it very carefully or you'll scratch your brand new calipers!!!!!!

Note: While I was waiting for my paint coats to dry I was repairing the light scuffs on my alloys using your typical alloy repair kit. I don't know if I was lucky with the paint but each coat dried within 20minutes facing the sun at about 22degrees.

I've taken a load of photos of each stage so give me a shout if you need any help!

Never used hammerite paint so assumed it'd need drying time between coats.

I used Hammerite Hammered Blue.  I gave them a really quick go over with a wire brush (literally 20 secs on each), gave them all one coat then another coat 30 minutes later.  Still look good to this day :)

Hammerite for me too. Rubbed down to bare metal as paint was very flakey, 2 coats of paint with a brush. Looks nice and neat and a lot better now not faded and peeling. Fronts to do next weekend!

Heard some mixed responses from this recently but don't know if any of you guys can shine any light on this, I've given some calipers a couple of coats of hammerite smooth and theres a couple of spots which will need rubbing back and whatnot :S but does anyone know if you can effectively wet sand the hammerite back a bit and then clear coat it with a VHT lacquer? Some googling has led to it possibly bubbling and wrinkling the hammerite..... Anyone able to advise? :S
