VW Planning More .:R Models
« on: October 09, 2014, 10:11:45 am »
In a recent sit-down with various media outlets, Motoring.com.au reports that Volkswagen’s Head of Powertrain Development Dr. Heinz-Jakob Neuser hinted that additional R models are currently under consideration, due in part to the success of the Golf R.  When pressed further on which models were under consideration, Dr. Nuessen commented specifically on the Golf, Polo and Passat.  Turbocharged six-cylinder power was also mentioned, more specifically in a longitudinal orientation, paired with 4MOTION.

With most models in the “consideration” stage of development, the key factor to pursuing a production model of the vehicle lies in the ability to create a sound business case.  As upcoming Volkswagens will use modular architecture, the costs associated with these vehicles will be greatly reduced which is a good thing for both Volkswagen and enthusiasts alike.  We know that we certainly wouldn’t mind a few more enthusiast-based models in the Volkswagen lineup.

I'd be surpised if that happened tbh - won't that tread on the toes of the Audi "S" models, e.g. s4?  Although having said that the current "R" and S3 are actually pretty similar already i guess..   :driver:

Golf R estate for me please, where do i sign!   :happy2:

Which is why the Mk7 range is the most expensive models of Golfs...  :stupid:

But that's exactly it, isn't it?
Production costs of that engine are already known so they just ship the 3.0TFSI into a high powered Passat (or similar) and any prospective buyer of an S4/S5 is likely to consider the VW equivalent anyway, so they offer that prospect base yet another option amongst the already over-crowded VAG range  :chicken:
