Eng oil burnt within 2 months!?
« on: May 23, 2016, 02:24:43 pm »
Guys,

I did an oil n filter change in march with millers ee longlife 5w30. I could feel the difference in the engine instantly and engine temps kept temp alot longer. Never even now hasn't gone above 90•c

The other day had dreaded oil light. Took the dipstick out and low and behold the oil was touching lower limit, but also was blackened. I checked the oil regularly and for the first month, its was on point and held colour.

Admittedly my driving the past month has been heavy footed at times. But only for lil stretches over a journey. I expect some loss n colour change from this. But this oil seemed like a miracle oil when i first used it. Like nothing before.

The past month I've also been having weird mpg readings and somewhat loss of boost. I thought i needed a new dv but maybe the two are related. I've also had my first significant journey 38,5mpg in the past month too(doing 35/40mph back from ace on 406, off at staples 12miles i think)

Should i top up the oil or change?

Can i top up with another brand or does it have to be millers? Has anyone seen their prices recently? X2

What other oil recommendations have people got.

As always any help appreciated,
Thanks R

Mine used to do it but thankfully and oddly it's been the same for the past six months after topping it up with 5w 40 triple qx and 3000k

Going to 5-40 from 5-30, "cured" my oil consumption.
There are several threads up about this...

Millers is overkill...for me.

OP
Unlikely to need a change just now.
Blackening normal, as is light oiling in airside. How much oil you seeing?

Top up, then check more regularly, daily even, until you get a feel for what's going on.
No leaks then?

5w 40 is mostly used for cars either chipped mapped or people with a heavy foot which is me at times. I've also found the thinner 5w 30 does burn a lot quicker as this was tested over the first few months of driving and then I replaced it with 5w 40 and checked it every 1000k up till now and it's still on full  I think it's done 6k since I've had the car now.

No leaks. :(

The oil was about a 1/4 up the bottom of the lower 'below min' part of the dip stick.  Was serviced mid march.

Think I've fallen off the millers band wagon, or more accurately slipped out under the side curtains, ran and not looking back. At least I know better now.

The ic pipes had a cap full of oil, in each ic pipe.

So my mech goes if there oil in the ic pipes i could have gone turbo seals. Please save me again guys. But then also i showed him what a pcv is and he went quiet. Was abit of oil in the plastic pipe from the pcv.

Will follow the above and maintain. Will keep you up to date.

It also depends on how much oil was filled on service?. was it at the top of the line.
If your turbo is on its way you'll soon have clouds of smoke pouring out of the exhaust.

How any miles have you done since the oil change.

Your right there r5. No smoke yet. Phew

Topped up oil yesterday with quantum, I think. Need another drive today as only did about 5 miles.

Engine sounds rough when dipstick/filler cap off, so pcv staying on for now.

Wierd mpgs &  noises from before still point me to bad dv. Its prob from factory.
Heard some wheezing yesterday for the first time too. I hope i can get this dv swapped soon and fix everything!

Its just the ic pipes worrying me.
Btw i was in abit of a panic yesterday to say the least. So thanks for the reassuring words guys. I Had my wisdom tooth pulled out last tuesday and felt what feels like to cavities in the two adjacent teeth yesterday morning. Only because the wisdom tooth pain had gone. So aswell as the car im not feeling to good right now either

I'd replace the dv and either get a gfb dv + or rev G as others like. your wheezing is probably down to the dv being split.

Don't tell me about teeth bro had mine taken out for no reason at all being silly and the dentist the twat left me in pain for two weeks as she couldn't even extract the tooth and broke it in half in the process so I feel your pain. Now the lower ones are rubbing against the top and causing more issues and she doesn't even clean my teeth properly. :slap:
