So for the past two weeks I've been uhming and ahhing about what to buy. I've looked at Astra GTC's (not particularly alluring and even with 180PS not all that exciting) and have also looked at an '09 mk6 GTI for £10k at a local dealer but I keep coming back to a Graphite Blue Pirelli on AT for £8750. Cambelt and DSG service just done late last year has the Nav as well and is a 5 door just like I need.

So, is there anything I should be looking for? I know to pull the dipstick while the engine is running to check it starts to hesitate so the DV valve (?) is ok and to check for rust under the boot badge and on the wings. As an '08 plate are there any changes or specifics that I should be looking at regarding the 230PS engine? It's a lot of cash for an 8 year old car so I want to make sure I check everything before I agree to take it and I'm willing, although ideally not having to, come home carless.

That's to check the PCV. The DV you will now if it's kaput when you test drive it. It will lack boost and just feel like a standard 2.0 when giving it some.

Check how the engine sounds after your test drive (ie when it's hot), if it sounds a bit chuggy like a diesel it could mean the chain/tensioner is due. They're not a servicable item as far as I know, but they do wear, and sometimes fail. Factor 400+ quid for that. Otherwise, check it's had oil and services when it should have etc.
