Pioneer SPH-DA120 won't power down!
« on: February 13, 2015, 09:12:58 pm »
Hi all

I bought one of these to replace the OEM unit (without a MFSW.)  I wanted bluetooth connectivity and streaming.  Saw the spec on the SPH-DA120 and was drawn in by the Apple maps function as well as the promise of more CarPlay apps coming online.

I bought from Halfords, with the usual confidence-sapping experience of dealing with their "specialists."  They had said they'd have the facia adaptor in stock but when I turned up, naturally they didn't.

They supplied the wiring harness adapter plugs and the adapter for the fakra antenna connection.

A quick test-fit established:

The fakra connection adapter was the wrong type (single instead of double & with a shallow L-shaped connection for the head unit instead of the regular, deeper male connector.

The wiring harness fits and connects power and speakers but when the ignition is turned off, the head unit doesn't power-down.  There appears to be no way to turn it off on the unit itself either.

The body of the Pioneer isn't large enough to secure firmly in the aperture left by the larger OEM unit and it seems it would bounce about in there.  I noticed there are locating tabs in the rear of the OEM unit which slot into the  rear of the frame of the aperture.

On the plus side, the sound is good and the interface for music and naps seems as good as I hoped.

Does anyone know of any kit or adapter to make the unit sit more snuggly, hopefully even using the aperture slots to locate in?  I've seen quite a few kits and parts online but bone seem to address this issue apart from what looks like some foam blocks which I'm guessing would be used to pad it out a bit.

Also, most importantly, is there a definitive view on how to address the constant live power issue?  I've seen references to OpCom and yellow and red wires being switched bit I'm confused by it.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Hello what car is it as that would help ???

To be honest with you unless you had the unit out on mk5 golf if it is mk5 golf there are about 4 different wiring harnesses for them single or double fakra and male and female side and also normal aerial bit of pain. Also you can run ignition separate again if it's mk5 golf otherwise the original wiring does not have ignition. Swapping wires around red and yellow is for memory so when you turn the car off and radio doesent good memory for radio stations etc that's when you swap them.

D'oh, yeah sorry, it's a mk5, GT Sport TSi.  It's double fakra too.

So any idea how I work out what I need?

Thanks

Am guessing you had a rcd300 what ever the original was. Well I run a fused wire behind climate control which is a ignition so it turns on and off get a multimeter and test the wires while turning ignition on and off that will tell you which one would be an ignition also I bought a decent connects2 double din kit was a bit pricey but fits and hold stereo perfect. Doesent have any prongs to support it. Halfords do do them but can't remember about £70-80 if you go on car audio security or similar website Halfords will price match it for you providing the competitor has it in stock. You will have to wait for it to come in and they probably will not stock it

Hi I'm wondering if anyone could help me with the sph da120 I have fitted the stereo nicely and got all the wires hidden and realised that it won't actually power down! To stop it draining my battery I have just took the whole thing out as I don't want to risk not having a car
I have a mk5 golf 2006 does anyone know if I was to swap the yellow and red round so they connected to each other would this make the stereo turn off when I take the key out and turn on when the ignition is on
Cheers guys

The mk5 golf doesn't have a switched live to the OEM head unit.  It uses can bus signals to tell the oem stereo when to turn off.  Your aftermarket stereo needs a switched live though so it turns on and off with the ignition.  You can take a switched live feed from the air-con controls, cigarette lighter or directly from the fuse box.

Yeah that's what I did when I had one of these for all of 1 hour, then took it back the next day    I previously had an RNS510 and this unit is not even close in terms of quality and OEM fit and finish.  Plus the MASSIVE bundles of wires that comes with the Pioneer got on my swede.  I like neat

I like carplay, but I just didn't get on with this unit in all honesty.   Having said that, it did sound better than the RNS510, which is the main thing I guess.  And it's currently £60 off at Halfords.
