Does anybody know if you can install an armrest in a MkV 3DR. For example, this shape

You can indeed.  My 3 door has one.  Just need to buy the bits off ebay, or from VW.

Nope!!

Cup holder out, screws off, plastic side trims unclipped.

I took all of mine apart one rainy day to feed a wire back!

Yep, dead easy!  Mine already came with one from the factory but I've taken it to bits to fit an MDI and it's all just Lego really.

Yep as already said it's doable, I'm in the same situation and will be changing to the armrest very soon.
Have a chat with @danboy he may be able to help you out with the parts needed for the conversion

Cheers @rob1 I do have a complete cloth arm rest with the Euro cup slider/holder this one have a nice big cubby hole with an aircon chiller like the glove box quite rare the only thing it will need the air vent as they are broken
