Reversing camera snapped wire
« on: April 03, 2016, 02:07:37 am »
Hi has anyone had any luck in repairing the common snapped wire on the mk6 reversing camera? Was going to try and solder the wire togeather and then cover in liquid insulation and loom tape for strength!

Any one got any better ideas or know of a cheep place for just the camera!

Cheers Mark

Wow that is a lot of damage to insulation and wires..  :surprised:

I would do as you say but extend the wire to take off the tension/strain and maybe do that with the other wires too as a precaution as they don't look much better.

Good luck mate!  :happy2:

I had the same issue with mine but had less wire exposed compared to yours.  I ended up getting a Stanley knife and peeling back the black plastic to expose the wire a bit more and soldered the wires together and then tiger sealed it up.

All three of mine broke!!! http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,69555.135.html

The only way I could see to sort out was to insert a bit of staple to wire ends then solder onto that. Didn't like the idea of a that so managed to get a new camera unit from Ed and installed that. I used liquid tape, wrapped in fibre tape then used a thick cable tie to try and sort the problem out which seems to be working so fingers crossed. Bad design by VW

The RVC of my GT Sport had one of wires broken so I went to a friends house who cut a bit of the plastic of the camera holder and soldered the wire and then fit heat shrick wire sleeve to protect it. He also noticed that the other 2 wires had the insulation broken so he fit heat shrink wire sleeve in them as well. In the end he altered the way those 3 thin wires were fixed to the other cables to prevent them from bending so much when the camera activates.

I have a brand new camera I could sell.

When I bought a reverse camera badge I didn't know there were two types and just bought the one for sale.
It was highline version with grid lines & needed a seperate controller box  (not included)

I bought a brand new low-line camera, with the intention of swapping over.

However whilst waiting for delivery I found a cheap controller and bought instead.

I'll have a look, when I get in later, see if I can put mu hands on it quickly and think of a price.

I hear if you have a new onw / good wiring you can tape a spring (from a biro) over the wire to make it stress relieved :D

Anyone keep a record of which wires go into the camera in which order? In my effort to repair, the eight wires pulled clear out of the terminal block on the back of the camera, and now I can't be sure which wire goes to which pin...
