Smokey ed30,
« on: August 18, 2017, 02:20:47 pm »
Hi all, after some advice if possible.
Got a stage 2+ ed30 and recently started to  notice its smoking a fair bit on tickover once its hot,
As i start to drive away get a nice big puff of white /blue smoke and once driving no smoke what so ever, again this only happens once its been drivin and is rather hot. Seems to be using abit more oil than normal too. So assuming i have a leak somewhere in the system.

White is coolant, blue is oil and black is fuel isnt it?

So what i was going to ask is where should i start looking guys?

Read about the rocker cover and the pcv that runs through it, so bypassed that and still no joy (replaced the pcv too) checked the oil return feed on the turbo as read that can block up too, and thats clear.
Car is ran on 5w40 castrol edge so wouldnt it possiibly be worth changing the oil?

Also does anyone recommend any specialists local to cheshire for a diagnosis as aks is a 192miles from me :(

Cheers in advance :)

Pop down to Halfords and get yourself a compression tester mate.  I know you don't want to hear this, but we need to outrule cylinder issues first

Pull the plugs (check them for oil fouling whilst they're out), remove relays 100 and 167 from the fusebox in the engine bay.  Screw the compression tester into cylinder 1, crank it over for ~ 10 seconds.  Take a reading, repeat on the other 3.

You want to see at least 200psi on all 4, slightly more ideally.  170-180 is acceptable, but the outer limit and could do with a rebuild.   Huge variance across 1 or more cylinders usually spells trouble - most likely a cracked ring land if it's around 50psi.

If your bottom end is 200 or more, then happy days, we can sign the engine off as healthy.   A leak down test would be useful too, but you can't do that yourself without a compressor and a sparkplug adapter for it.

If not the engine, it's usually PCV deletes, followed by full TBE 3" exhausts, followed by worn turbo seals, and lastly, worn valve guides/seals.

What's the full spec of your engine mate?

Cheers for the quick reply! Wasnt expecting anyhing till later aha.

A friend in a garage can do a compression test so il ask him 'borrow' he parts from work, so il see about getting that done later,

Spec is:
Stage 2+ rtech, stage 2 airtec fmic, bcs 3"tb powervalve, revo camcoat induction, aks rfd, loba hpfp, rs4 fprv,  gfb dv+ think thats the main bulk,

Never went down the route of a pcv delete just used the most recent valve.

Nice spec  :happy2:

I really hope it's not the cylinders, but if you're on the TFSI tuning group on Facebook, you can't help but notice the amount of Stage 2+ peeps popping pistons.

Once the most expensive bit is outruled, we can move onto less expensive bits!

Good luck!

Oil on the electrode or the threads?

1 and 4 are a bit on the low side, but doesn't sound like a piston has gone.

How many miles on it?  Any cold starting issues? Lumpy and grumpy?  Your injectors may need replacing.  Did the white smoke smell like rich fuelling?

Its on just shy of 120k so quite high. No issues starting runs smooth as anyhing apart from the puffs of smoke. N 1 injector was replaced and the other 3 were refurbed by mr injector before it was mapped as i had a misfire originally. And its always ran a little rich as i get an eml sayin that its running lean but it basnt cropped up since i replaced a pipe from.the pcv that was cracked

I saw a post from Niki about knackered injectors causing white smoke, so thought I'd check how old yours are and if the smoke smells fuely.

You say you've got a black spark plug, so that could point to the injectors getting old and dribbly like an old man's leaky prostate.  At 120K, I'd be budgeting for some brand new ones personally.  These stage 2+ tunes seem to tip them over the edge.

Nothing conclusive with the engine block, so maybe a leak down test is next just to see how much it's breathing past the rings.

Ok, well il find out which one is the new one, but as i say 3 were refurbed with new seals etc. And its always had a slight rich smell to the exhaust anyway? N i can always look at gettin new injectors too.
Also try and find a place to get a leak test done too. Every worthwhile specialist isnt local too me unfortunatly :(
N heres me dreaming of a cheap fix haha,
