Is the mk6 edition 35 worth it from a mk5 golf gti?
« on: July 19, 2019, 12:51:27 am »
Hi all,)

Iv had my mk5 gti (2005) stock for over 6 years now and feeling the urge for a new car however for the money I'am finding it hard to beat the golf and I always end up looking at mk6 edition  35s.
Has anyone done this switch and is it worth the extra premium (at least 10k)??

Thanks in advance.

Maybe have a look at S3s as they now seem pretty cheap. ED35 is not much different from what you already have, being more of a facelifted mk5 than a new generation model.

Thanks, good shout as I havent really looked at the S3s. I assume they are a more premium version of the mk6 r.

Whilst on paper the ED35 seems great its just alot more money for essentially a very similar car...

S3s are excruciatingly dull to look at though.

Establish what your priorities are first.  If it's styling, it's got to be an Edition 30 for me personally.   If you want all weather traction and better [than VW] interior quality, get the S3.  If you definitely want a Golf but better made than the MK5, get the ED35.

Simples

I don't get the ED35 personally, or Sciroccos, but that's just me.  Perhaps skip them and look at MK7s?

I think the ed35 are way over priced and agree to look at mk 7.

I currently have a Mk5 GTi (3 door DSG) a 7R (3 door DSG) and a candy white Ed35 (3 door Manual)
I know which one will be worth the most in the future   and the one which will be the most desirable, I'll let you all work out which you think  :happy2:

So which one? the manual?

I actually went to see a ed 35 and to be fair I really like it and might have bought it but there were a few issues with this particular one.

Going to see another one tomorrow but I am still not convinced on the asking price. I also feel that they might be quite hard to sell in the private market...

Lol, you shouldn't really buy a MK5> Golf for future value speculation, least of all the MK6 ED35   GTIs are drivers cars  :driver:

It's only the specials (G60 Limited, Corrado VR6, Rallye) and major iterations that will hold their value.  MK5, MK7 etc.  The MK6 ED35 is just a MK5.5 ED30 with the same engine. Nothing special about it over and above an ED30 at all imo.....and it is one dreary looking car, especially in dishwasher white, imo.

Edition 35's are relatively rare if thats your thing. (in the UK 350 ish of each gearbox type)
Can easily be tuned as per Edition30 as its all the same tuning gear
I moved from a 120k Edition 30  3dr to a 20k Edition 35 5dr
3dr's are the better looking in either model but for me theres something about the Mk5 body.
DSG is incredible but dull, BUT I recently went RTech Stage 1 and the big DSG benefit is not having to worry about the clutch post remap.
In isolation I could have bought Mk7 R / GTI or Clubsport but have had really bad experiences with theft so really didnt want the attention.
Commute every day in my ED35 and love it.

I think people need to be careful not to confuse rare with being special. Only the latter truly justifies paying premium prices. There are plenty of nice Boxsters out there for Ed35 money or less - heritage, handling, flat 6 howl etc.

If you like the Mk5 GTI you will enjoy Mk6 Edition 35 ownership.  Ok it maybe £10k more but it will be seven years newer so seems about right.
I own and enjoy both models. The Ed35 is basically an improved and newer Ed30 but about four times more exclusive in total UK deliveries. IMO it will always be more desirable and hold value better than the stock Mk6 GTI. The engine is more reliable and tuneable than the standard Mk6 too. It comes with some nice standard spec like the leather, gloss black mirrors and standard xenons/LEDs too which do add to the car. Most Ed 30s didn't come with xenons and the standard lights aren't brilliant...

thanks guys. I went to look at another from VW which was tatty for the price so I have decided to focus the search for a private one and probably save some money...
