Second hand turbo

My K03 seems to have the dreaded actuator noise on de-acceleration   - mechanic says the clip method is only a temp fix. Thinking about using as excuse to do the k04 upgrade (map, all other parts, probably need a clutch)

Theres a pirelli edition thats clocked 160.000km (100,000miles)but has been the only wreckers I've contacted thats willing to part the turbo from the engine. Would this be too high for a second hand turbo and whats an acceptable mileage on one considering I'll be tuning it to around 330-350bhp?

dont want the same actuator problem as my k03 either

You could try it and it last for years or it could last for days.

I wouldn't bother fitting a used one with that mileage personally.  Given the amount of work required to fit it, you'd be better off starting afresh with a reconditioned one, or brand new.  £1000 inc VAT for a new from aftermarket suppliers, or a recon will set you back about half that, but will benefit from better bearings if you ask for them.  For a bit more you can spec a hybrid or mildly improved one.

Fwiw the Turbo Technics K03 hybrid is @£750 for a unit which plumbs straight in. Journal bearing / billet compressor wheel / 360bhp capable.

I've got mine you can have for free. No play, checked by R-Tech post fitting my K04. its done 130k but, run fine and dandy :-)

You'll need a fair amount of extra parts to go with a KO4, plus a KO4 specific map.  But the pay off is worth it.

Or just stick a CDL in and get considerably more engine strength to compliment the extra grunt.

A CDL engine swap would be the most expensive route wouldnt it? labour rates for work on euro cars in aus is highway robbery

Did Aus get the S3?  If not, that's that plan out the window!

It may appear more expensive on the surface, but once you factor in future mods it can work out more cost effective in the long run.  The standard GTI lump isn't that strong once you start shoving more chooch in.
