Best mods to increase traction stage 1 Ko3
« on: May 04, 2020, 04:42:12 pm »
Hi there,

I have a stage 1 ko3 DSG but really struggle for traction. Tyres are not that old as came with the car but are 17 sport maxx.
Apart from tyres, and suggestions on those are welcome, what would you say are the best mods you have done for traction?

Stiffer front bushes (with ALK) and engine mounts will help however you still need a gentle right foot.

How many miles has yours done? - probably suspension shot
Tyres - I tried some Yokohamas for the first time in many years, they were dangerously bad for grip both stopping and going, you new tiyres may just be crap

Its done 51k. The tyres were on it when ingot it at 49k, sport maxx with good tread but imo they are sh*t. Last few cars had pilot sport 4s and goodyear assy 2.

Maybe i just need a 4wd car for my heavy foot haha

Tire grip really matters the most'.'
Other traction improvements;
Tight suspension bushings...oem or upgraded works so long as they are tight.
Anti-lift kit
Stiffer engine and trans mounts

You likely experience wheel hop right? Power level is the determining factor on what all you need to do to eliminate the hop. Some find a dogbone insert is all that's needed to fix the hop. Others, the insert plus an ALK(anti lift kit) does it. Those with increased power may also need to go a step further and replace the Eng and Trans mounts. You simply need to chase the hop based on the power you have as well as the suspension stiffness. Some say just get the dogbone insert, but they leave out their the power theirs makes, spring rate or dampers, or ARB situation. It all has an effect.

All of that ↑ other than tires...are just necessary adjustment needed for use and driver preference.

If there's not a team working on those tweaks...then you are left with the old trial and error path.
As replacements are installed; under and over steer will change and adjustments are required if traction issues are taking place when cornering.

You can simply begin replacing bits and adjusting those which can be adjusted to see how much it helps or how much it affects under and over steering. Then you make the next move.

Yeah it will be the tyres, and your heavy right foot!

Start with some better rubber and go from there.   Most highly tuned K03/K04 GTIs with dialled in suspension and decent rubber don't tend to get traction issues with measured throttle inputs in the lower gears.
