OldGTI - Glad to hear you're a diligent chap    There's no reason why a GTI shouldn't last well past 200K if you put the preventative maintenance in.

As you say, driving enjoyment and carefree ownership are important factors as enthusiasts.  A few years ago, there was no way I would ever buy a Golf R or a BMW 140i as hooded hoodlums would almost be guaranteed to bust your back door in looking for the keys.  Who needs that kind of anxiety over a car?
That's where a nice MK5 slots in quite nicely.  It's off the thieves radar being low value and slow (by current standards, for a getaway car) and the wider public ignore it because it's not some stupid, obnoxious, boutique, crass and pointless SUV that everyone has a hard-on for these days.  It just merely exists for those in the know, which is great    It's 80% of a newer Golf and 100% classless, as you say 

It still makes me chuckle when some compost salesman in his Audi A4 diesel tries to push me and my 13 year old Golf out of the way.....ha.....try that again fella 

What age 911 do you have sir?  If it's a classic, I'm guessing 964 or older? I drove a 993 3.6 VarioRam (widebody import) many moons ago and to me, it felt like the metaphorical glove. Perfectly sized and powered for quick UK B road progress.  The steering feel and structural integrity were something else.  911s are very stout cars 

I have a 1989 911 speedster which I love.


I do like a classic Porsche as they were made so well that you can leave them for 6 months, connect the battery and know it is going to get you all the way to somewhere like Le Mans classic and back without any issues.
I have not driven a 993 but used to have a 930 LE and I just sold my 968 so I am a fan. I think one of the reasons a like the gti is because of the Porsche type checked seats :).

Very nice    Silver with black/polished Fuchs wheels.  Doesn't get much better than that 

This isn't the 993 I was talking about, but exactly like it.  Very nice to drive and feels like it was milled from a solid block of steel.  You have to remember not to hug the racing line too tightly with the rear wheels sticking so far out

Thanks mate, I do love it. It is Limehouse Basin I used to have a flat there so not a million miles away from St Katharine’s.

Glad you enjoy and I’m sure it’s been a great investment too. I sold both my e30 m3 and 964rs long before their values zoomed but not to worry lol

Been there done that mate. Anyway back to the gti I have to say I love it as a daily I have upgraded the head-unit to an RDS330 so have Waze on the big screen and could not be happier. I am not the only one my pal drove my little gti and was so impressed he sold his 997 and got a Jap import Pirelli which he loves.

Yeah, I’m in a similar boat with the GTi - does most stuff well and is really all the car we need.  After 15 years ownership (and only 32k miles), I’m getting an itch for something new and shiny though I do agree that a modern head-unit with carplay does update it quite usefully. Maybe will keep it and run something like a boxster gts on the side.

I'm coming at this topic from a slightly different angle having reluctantly selling my GTI earlier in the year. The circumstances at the time are now behind me thankfully and I do really miss the MK5, so much so that I am currently looking for another. They really are great all round cars.
