Bootlid electrics dead
« on: April 13, 2021, 04:16:11 pm »
Noticed the other day the bootlid wouldn’t open, on further inspection the brake lights in the bootlid, the rear fog and the rear wiper don’t work either.

Outer lights work, so indicators and dipped beam etc.

Just seems everything associated directly with the bootlid has died.

I went through every single fuse in the compartment on the drivers side, no blown fuses... is there another fuse box that may have the answer?

Seems to strange to be anything else?? Any suggestions, the YouTube videos and other forum posts I’ve read haven’t helped to solve the problem.

Thanks in advance

Check the looms. For me it's the left hand side (nearside) loom that's screwed. Boot release, wiper and demist are all dead, however lights and wash are fine. Part number for the left is 1K6 971 147 Q and see this post https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,86689.0.html

Skint at the moment so having to leave it, I'll do it before winter :D You can find repair kits if you search for the part number.

As mentioned the loom in the left side tailgate flex joint.

Wires are tight in there and eventually break with the age of the car now.....I had a similar issue.

I pulled back the cover and soldered the broken wires together with a bridge wire, as they are quite tight in there....been fine ever since.

I guessed that was the area where they’d succumb to damage, looked on eBay last night and the “repair” kit is basically that section

Is this easy enough to do if you've never soldered before? What type of wire do you need to use? I'd rather extend the existing wires than put another one in that's too short
