U-Joint on Steering Column Assembly

Hello all, recently I’ve discovered the steering issue that my car’s been having is coming from the u-joint on the steering shaft, looks like there’s some wear there that’s making it have some play, I was able to notice this by moving the steering wheel while holding the shaft below the interior u-joint, so anyways, my question is..would I have to purchase a whole new steering column assembly or is there a way to get just those the u-joint knuckles with the shaft and attach it to the steering column?

Yeah mine has the same issue but I'm putting it off until it gets REALLY bad.  It's sold as a complete assembly unfortunately, probably for an exorbitant amount.

 :doh: Sucks I spent so much money and time in replacing suspension parts (coilovers, steering rack, tires, tie rods, bushings, swaybar, end links, etc) trying to fix my steering issue, just for this to be the culprit

I contacted the dealer and the price for a new assembly is $500  :stupid:

Yup.  Been through that process so many times with Golfs/Corrados over the years.  Maybe get the part from a wreckers yard from a much younger car?  My MK6 TDI with only 53K miles on it has zero slop in the steering.  My GTI is on 165K and has loads of slop  :grin:  Maybe I should swap them over and not tell the missus  :grin:
