Changing laptop from Vista to Windows 7
« on: October 03, 2010, 05:17:24 pm »
Hi everyone

I know there are a few computer people on here so hopefully someone can help.

My laptop is currently running Vista which I have had enough of now and was thinking of upgrading it to Windows 7.  Is this the right piece of software?:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Microsoft-Windows-Premium-English-OEM/dp/B002NGQLMU/ref=sr_1_1?s=software&ie=UTF8&qid=1286121850&sr=1-1

I've copied all the files I want to keep onto my external hard drive and am not worried about keeping current settings, etc.

TIA

Are you planning to do a clean install?  And how much RAM do you have?

P.S.  If you do a clean install (i.e. not an upgrade) then you have more options.

Hi

I'm pretty sure it's got 2gb of ram.

I was just talking to someone about it & they recommended a clean install, a fresh start!

Yes would have to agree. We always do a clean install. Just make sense to start from fresh if possible.

Before you start, I would suggest you look in device manager and try to locate all the required drivers and save them to disc or usb key.

Additionally running the windows upgrade adviser may alert you to possible unforseen  hardware or software issues.

I would recommend a clean install, get rid of Vista completely - also rules out any possible problems you may have inthe future.

7 does have most drivers and one's it doesnt windows does a good job of getting from windows update automatically

Thanks for all your comments.

I've run the upgrade advisor and apart from a couple of programs that weren't compatable, it all looks ok. Hopefully that will be the case when the software turns up!

I'll make a copy of the drivers just to be safe.

Thanks

A word of caution google your make of laptop and problems with Win 7. It took me 3 months to resolve a blue screen problem that drove me near insane. Finally Intel launched a new chipset driver that solved the wretched issue.
