Steering/ wheel noise
« on: May 05, 2011, 12:00:28 pm »
Hi guys got a 2007 November 57 reg mk5 gti
Since having a new tyre I have had a noise from either a front wheel or steering. It's only when in a straight line when you turn the wheel it goes untill you back straight any ideas? Had car tracked and balanced as the new alloys fitted under warranty monza 18s were not balanced? Only noticed when had a new tyre fitted due to buldge in side wall ? Would unbalanced wheels for 5 months do any damage to bearings etc? Hope you can help VW already checked Suspension brakes etc reckon no problem

Your post is quite confusing. What type of noise is it. and what tyre have you fitted.  :happy2:

Ok i have reread your post, are you saying you had all four Monza's replaced under warranty, then you noticed a bulge in the tyre wall 5 months later, so got it replaced and noticed that the wheels were not balanced.

I bought the car in November from VW and as part of eal they replaced the monza 18s under warranty due to corrosion car has been great for 5 months apart from cambelt tensioner and water pump done under warranty. Couple of weeks ago noticed buldge in front near side tyre replaced it but comPany noticed no wheels balanced now balanced the car shakes a little at 70mph and there is a constant noise like a bearing spinning noise bit like wind wistling when steering wheel in straight line. When you turn it left or right it didsappears. VW deny anything wrong ???

Snap, I gots this too!!

Sounds like a wuring noise, almost like something is spining but to slow to be the revolution of the wheels, if i'm turning right when doing over 50mph ish, even if its just a tiny fraction, straightnen up or turn right and it goes.

I have only noticed it since I put 18's on but i've only had the car a short amount of time so it might have done it since I bought it.

Might be a wheel bearing.

Yeah that's it spot on had VW check all suspension brakes etc and said it's not a safety issue but it's what to do next they suggested try and different set of wheels so it rules them out

There is no way you would not notice all 4 wheels being unbalanced, as soon as you went over 50MPH you would get severe vibration with all 4 being unbalanced.
What tyre have you fitted.  :happy2:

Mine seems to be getting worse, I get the shakes at about 70 but my wheel balancing is probably out.  I am going to wait untill it gets worse, I'm fed up with taking my car to a mechanic when I feel something not right and they don't feel it or just start changing random bits.

Also being without my car is a no no, I might see if I can get a moblie mechanic out, my friend swears by his.

You tried anything Dave?

Can only think of balancing, i'm sure you would know if a wheel had a slight buckle.

How much did it cost to get the bearings and hubs done

480£ quoted from VW kicked up fuss been done under warranty I'm wondering could it be an engine or gearbox mount broken ? As only shuddering when no load on the car
