The other thing you have over looked is VED...

R32
VED Band (until April 2009): G
VED for 2008-09: £400
VED Band (April 2009 on): L
VED for 2009-10: £415
VED for 2010-11: £430

GTi
VED Band (until April 2009): F
VED for 2008-09: £210
VED Band (April 2009 on): J
VED for 2009-10: £260
VED for 2010-11: £270

Ed30
VED Band (until April 2009): F
VED for 2008-09: £210
VED Band (April 2009 on): J
VED for 2009-10: £260
VED for 2010-11: £270

All figures are for manual. Comsuption/emissions on DSG car's are all slightly better but not enough to effect tax banding

Quite a premium for that noise and Haldex.
Only 250.1bhp - but with that noise, who cares?

Mile-muncher ordered: MkVI 1.6 TDi BlueMotion Match DSG with leather, winter pack, luxury pack, fogs, climate control, Dynaudio pack, RCD510 with DAB & MDI, flat tyre indicator

Quite a premium for that noise and Haldex. Yeah but just think of the excusvity, especially if you have a white one... :happy2:

Will these bandings affect early MKV R32's regsitered before 31/03/06 as these currently fall into the lower tax banding.
Cheers,

Wayne

ETTO - I wouldn't buy an R32 to be exclusive. To the uninitiated, it's still just a Golf. I was dead set on getting one myself, but then started running the numbers and the GTi is better is almost every respect: tuning, handling, power-to-weight, transmission losses, insurance, economy, VED band, looks, heritage etc etc. I agree the noise is one of the best exhuast notes ever, but that just isn't enough to swing it for me. This is by no means a criticism of those that do have them - it's just too expensive for me and I prefer the way the GTi looks and drives.

Why are the old cars banded differently - are they running an older engine? Old Mk4/Mk5 R32's as follows:

VED for 2008-09: £210
VED for 2009-10: £215
VED for 2010-11: £245
Only 250.1bhp - but with that noise, who cares?

I'd thought about the VED and if it is pre 23/03/06 it falls into the £210 bracket which is set to rise slightly this & next year. As far as I can tell its just the latest legislation on car tax that has caused the increase and has nothing to do with the engine or anything else.

Animal seems to raise some good points that also seem to be backed up by some of the other comments so it looks like I'll have to concentrate on finding a nice example of a GTi.

I'll just have to get over that noise!:jumping:
