Is it worth getting a second car?
« on: May 09, 2012, 10:34:50 am »
Hi all,

I bought my Edition 30 at the end of December last year on 36k and I've just clocked on to 42k, an average of 1500 miles per month. The fuel bill doesnt worry me too much, but Im more worried about the mileage my car will be on in a years time and the value it will lose due to that.

Do you think it's worth buying a £750 fiesta 1.25 as a weekly / commuting run about? Along with insurance it will cost me £1250 total, plus the usual TAX & MOT etc

Thanks

Well, only you can answer your question.

1 - How much do you enjoy driving your Ed30?

2 - How much more money do you think you'll gain when you sell it by driving that much less mileage?

3 - Is that financial gain worth it when compared with your quality of life and driving enjoyment?

I know what my answers are!

what they said, enjoy the car in the end of the day all cars will be approching 0 value, unless they become a classic in the future!

people confuse cars / bikes with investments hence frustration when they lose value!

Its all about quality of life. I used to drive round in an old car as a daily then bought the gti as i was fed up of it. Keep the ed30 as the daily and just swap it for another in a years time if your racking up mega mileage.  :happy2:

Just use the ED30. You obviously bought it to use as a daily driver so do just that. Running 2 cars is expensive and I can't see that a car costing a mere £750 and you asking it to do 1500 miles every month is going to last very long before something goes pop and your right back a square one minus £750+ the other bills!! IMHO it's a false economy!

If you can demonstrate your car has been serviced and looked after, the price reflection will always be less than driving a fezze.

Why own a ED30 if you're driving a fezza?

Seems stupid.

Ive brought this one year ago last week.

Best thing ive done if im honest... few things ive noticed since now running 2 cars, both + and -.

Fuel costs me £20 a week for around 170 mile range.
Car insurance required as Greenlight dont do joint car policys as my Ed30 is modified. Cost £209 for a years premium.
Car tax is now £20 a year.
Brand new purchase. paid £2000 on a 4 year deal, car has 5 yrs manufactures warranty. Cars paid for in 3 years from now, with no finally payment. Its mine to keep.
I pay £133 a month.

as to the Ed30...

Was costing me £65 a week in fuel for being used daily for same mileage.
Insurance still the same, as is road tax.

Ed30 now only gets used by me when i get the opertunity. On a plus, i clean it, and its still clean when i get the keys lol. Mileage now is now relitively lower for age and is good if your planning to keep this kind of car long term as i plan to.
Wear n tear rates on the golf have also reduced dramatically.

If you weigh the two up, im proberly not any worse off due to the ammount of fuel savings im making a month, which covers the cost of owning and running a 2nd car if im honest, but as a huge lover of my Ed30, im extremily happy that shes staying in great condition tucked away for when the mood takes me, and not being slowly run into the ground.

Knowing you as an Ed30 enthusiast with a second small car, I was waiting for you to pop up and post, Steve. But who's that bird who keeps popping up in all your photos?

Just dont do what i did! Got my Ed30 to take over from my Corrado G60 while that gets worked on and done up. Having two fast, rare cars doesn't make the best of sense! Oh well....
