How to: DIY oil change
« on: February 02, 2013, 07:29:44 pm »
Hi all

hope we are all well?

Quick question, i want to change the oil on the Gti.  I haven't found a how to yet, and I guess don't need to as it's not rocket science is it! :rolleye:

My questions (having never removed the plastic fantastic engine cover yet (why do they bother with such needless trim?)

1  where is the oil filter located and do i need to remove the engine cover to access it?  I am assuming it's similar in design now to the BMW series cars, with a 36mm cap you screw off and access the paper filter only?

2.  removing the oil.... do i need to remove  a load of plastic guards under the car to access the sump plug/filter at all?

3.  as per my old subaru impreza, they recommended filling the oil filter with oil to minimise the time the engine ran with low/no oil pressure until it filled from the sump to minimise damage to the turbo bearings.  As this oil filter appears to be now paper only, this isn't possible so I'm assuming the process is drain, remove filter, add new filter, oil, job done!

Thanks in advance and really loving the mk5 Gti..... it's great!
