New brake pads/disc recommendation please.
« on: March 12, 2013, 09:49:01 pm »
Hi guys,

What do people recommend for a good "fast road" set up on their GTI.

Discs and pads etc?

My standard combo seems pretty poor.

Grab a decent pad and have a fluid change; decent pads include: mintex 1144, ferrodo ds2500, tarox corsa
Scopes's hierarchical list above is spot on.

To add to it (and this is all my opinion)

GTI 312
Upgraded discs: tbh I wouldn't worry too much with the standard setup
Pads: yes worthwhile difference with those mentioned above
Braided Lines: yes great, however worth noting that braided lines can pose problems, as you can never tell if a line has split beneath; probably more track orientated than road use, less fit and forget than standard lines.

R32/Cupra/S3: bigger disc but still single piston, upgrade to above, however adds A LOT more unsprung mass...

NQSBBK: Lighter than standard GTI setup! But 4 pot POWA, awesome, keep your standard 312's too.  Best of all, but most expensive of the three.

Brake Fluid: VW 501.14  :happy2:

Where is a good place to buy things for the GTI, such as brack pads etc online?

Im used to Renaults so this is still all new to me  :ashamed:

Brake Fluid, make sure it meets the above VW standard 501.14, otherwise you mayhave ABS problems... :scared:

Or go down to your local VW parts desk.

Mintex 1144: I think Dave on here used to sell them for around £85, but not sure whether he does them anymore.

TBH, I'm yet to find one decent place for all my GTI bits, when I owned the SAAB I used to use NeoBrothers for most things, knowing that when stuff was ordered I could forget about it and know it would arrive.

What pads are people slapping on the rears if you keep them standard but upgrade the fronts to the NQS?

... depends if you want to be street legal or not as to which compound you choose.

Ferodo DS2500 / Mintex M1144s are both illegal on the highway :(

The R32 / Cupra / S3 calipers and larger discs are a big improvement, but do add quite a lot of unsprung mass to the front of the car.

NQS BBK or BBK are the best for weight saving and performance.
