Advice on buying a MKV GTi - Your Personal Opinions

Hi all
I'm fairly new to this forum, have owned several VW's in the past and the missus is now looking for a MKV to replace her Fox.
I've got my eye on a Pearl Black DSG GTi, it's done 75k on an 05 plate.
It's on Eibach Coilovers and staggered Alphards.

Just want to know if there's anything major I should be looking out for?
Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

Usual stuff mate, other than the usual gut feeling about the car and general tidyness/history, the particular talking points I can think right now of a GTI are...

HPFP cam follower, rusting front wings, rusting sills and boot lid badge, diverter valve split, PCV, knocking steering rack on a 2005.
With the DSG wspecially it needs an oil change every 40k so should be due one soon on distance done, check it is smooth. I have a manual but there is info on how to check if the DSG is iffy (can't remember it).

There will be more others chip in with, however they are quite robust cars, if you search for these individually you'll get a better picture.
Used to have Edition 30 - number 009 and a GT TDI 140.
Now have an S4 B8 Avant (stage 2)

1) At 80k miles you would have a DSG fluid and filter change = $900usd or about 600gbp to have done
2) Also at 80k miles you would have a timing belt, belt tensioner, and water pump replacement = 400gbp
3) You will soon need to replace the hpfp's cam follower and plugs... = 200gbp...don't worry about the plug's coils as they will offer up a CEL when faulty ;p
4) Your likely in need of intake valve cleaning... = 900gbp
These are my usd to gbp estimated conversions...so not exactly gospel...Three and four are easy enough for you to do yourself...but the first, costly, two are quite the bite!

Sorry mate, not sure some of your prices are right.
It wouldn't be anywhere near £600 to have the DSG fluid and filter changed. I haven't had it on the Golf yet but I had the 7speed version done on my A6 for less than £200.

Also, is the intake valve cleaning really £900?? I might be missing something obvious here, but I wasn't aware this was a critical thing to do on every single Golf.

In answer to the original post, as others have said go on general feel and condition of the car. Check all the paperwork is in order and look at the last MOT to see if there were any advisories, and if so have they been adressed.
Tyres are normally a good indication of the type of care it's had too. If they're a high quality brand (Goodyear/Pirelli etc) then it's normally a sign that the car has been taken care of reasonably well. If they're ditch finders though, then it suggests the owner has cut corners with cheaper bits elsewhere too!

Brake fluid change is another thing that needs to be done every 2 years but that's around £150.

For that price I would mostly be having the fluid replaced with Bollinger. :grin:

I'm glad you corrected my conversions...Our genuine vw shop rates are very high. $1200 to
$1500 having intake valves cleaned by scraping, etc.. DSG service is $900. Timing belt, tensioner, and pump is $600. C/F and plugs is $300.

Intake valves being cleaned is for direct injection motors and keeps performance and mileage up and yes...not required. But they inevitably will become detrimental.

Thanks guys, and yes it is that one, hopefully going to have a look at it this weekend,
To be honest was a bit shocked at some of the prices of stuff, are they main dealer prices or generic garage prices?
A friend of mine is a mechanic so most of the stuff can be done on our driveway.
Seems to be a good spec'd car but missus is a bit iffy about the DSG as shes never used one before but im sure shell get over that.
How prone are they to rusting as stated above? I thought all cars were galvanised nowadays to try and prevent that kind of thing from happening.

VERY prone to rusting , especially the front wheelarches - TBH if its ano 05 the rust should already be there , if it isnt apparent you want to be asking if its been in for new wings!

DSG oil change every 40k, VW cost is £179. Cambelt, waterpump, tensioners, approx £500 at VW.
