Fuel Pump
« on: January 03, 2014, 01:05:11 pm »
I have done a search on fuel pumps but a lot of information is coming up that I know nothing about uprated fuel pumps etc,

I am new to the world of VW, I only have experience with jap cars so excuse me if I sound extremely noobish but I know forums are the best place to find answers and guides etc.

So i have a few questions, I have been down to VW garage and they are looking for €400 for a new fuel pump incl fitting due to the low pitched humming noise as if the pump is struggling,

I have no problem fitting it myself as I don't believe it to be a big job (could be wrong?) I have been looking online and they all seem to be a lot cheaper than €400 but I can't really find any definitive answers as to which fuel pump will fit and work correctly into my 2007 GTI any help would be greatly appreciated.

One more thing Cam Follower should I be changing it? Just bought the car currently 90,000kms

Thanks in advance

Contact TPS (Trade Parts Specialist) or VW Dealership and give them your vehicle details and they will tell you which part you need.

Alternatively if you are looking at upgrading or modifying in the future then Loba and APR have options. As for the follower its £20-25, at 90000 km it might be ok but since your removing the pump you might as well install a new one.

What is the garage diagnosis of the fault, has the fuel actual and requested values been measured? 'As if the pump is struggling' sounds a little vague for €400 + labour.

Well it all started when I heard a noise coming from the rear of the car, its almost a humming noise like off a little motor its an electrical sound, a friend said it was the fuel pump to me so when i took vw they said it was the fuel pump and they would try change the fuel filter because sometimes it solves the problem, they changed the filter free of charge because it didn't solve the problem, I definitely think €400 is mad money to spend, considering you can get uprated fuel pumps for around the same.

I have been on ebay and various online shops trying to source down an appropriate solution but can't seem to find one that will fit my gti.

So you would recommend ringing vw and finding the exact part then search online?

I probably should have thought of that myself, thanks :happy2:

Sorry it seems you have confused the HPFP with the Fuel Tank lift pump. The lift pump feeds the high pressure side...you have to remove the rear seats to access the pump, Vagcom states a new pump needs adaptation.

Apologies on getting them confused or mixed up, so its the fuel thank lift pump then that needs replacing? What do you mean when you say needs adaptation? Thanks Again for the reply  :happy2:

do you think it is possible that the sound I am hearing is coming from this fuel tank lift pump? since the sound is coming from the rear?

I suspect the OP is not in the UK hence he quotes prices in euros.

Is the noise constant? When you open the drivers door the fuel system is primed and you can briefly hear a humming type sound.

Adaptation is required for certain new components added to the car, you need VCDS software do this. In this instance it's probably got something to do with 'pairing' the Fuel pump and Fuel pump controller values.

As for the actual problem, have you been given any fault codes? If it's just noisy well I guess all they can do is replace it.

The noise is constant unfortunately, its not noticeable meaning passengers wouldn't hear the sound until I tell them about it and then it just sounds like a ringing in your ears because the noise is so low, oh I see so its not exactly something I could do myself after all without software, there is no fault codes or warnings. What is the worst case scenario if this fails? I means it something that can be ignored until it is essential to replace? Or is it something that should be fixed as soon as possible? And could it be anything else? I will try post a video or sound clip tomorrow incase it might be something else that I'm missing, thanks

If it starts failing you will have fuel cuts or it might pack up all together and the car won't go very far . Is it at a VW dealership? You can always ask them to measure the current pumps output to see if its within specification.

You could DIY but you have to remove the rear seats http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,3510.0.html. Then drive it to someone or somewhere where they can run the adaptation. Depends on how involved you want to get...
