Extended Warranty or not?
« on: March 12, 2010, 01:33:56 pm »
Ok! Here's the deal: my '07 DSG equipped GTi has its third birthday on 21 March. Just passed its MOT with flying colours and had a check over at the local VAG dealer with nothing to report. Its done close to 31,000 miles and is on extended service intervals with its one and only service completed when I bought it 12 months ago with 19,000 on the clock. It uses no oil to speak of.

Its the first car that I've taken past its 3 year warranty in 30 years and I love it to bits! Can't think of anything I would change it for (except an ED 30 perhaps) and intend to keep it a couple more years

The question is whether I should get an extended warranty or take the risk and just get it serviced at a specialist at 40k with the big stuff to be done? Quoted £470 by warranty direct and it seems a lot for peace of mind.

Cheers

Its up to you really. The GTI's are pretty much bullet proof for all the major stuff, any problems with the DSG would have shown themselves by now, they only other major things that are known to go are the steering rack and the air-con, so you need to try and workout if it's worth it.

You pays ya money you takes ya chance.  :happy2:

I think it's the compressor that can fail. Not sure on cost but a few hundred quid IIRC

My air con packed up and would only blow hot air.   The compressor was changed under warranty and it was expensive!

When my original warranty ran out last May, I took out a 3 year extended warranty with Citygate VW as that is where I take my car.  Can't really comment on it as I haven't had to use it yet but preferred to have something rather than nothing.  Can't remember the exact price but it was much better than the offer I got to extend the original warranty!
