I also thought that about the DSG but I believe its a few people who have had bad ones which has created the myth,in a years ownership of a DSG I can honestly say I may struggle to go back to a manual,also the added bonus is you can if you wish to add extra power without worrying about the clutch.
Having the stamps for correct servicing of the DSG is essential,look for oil and filter receipts as well,every 40k iirc
