Detailers - Help me choose polishes
« on: March 07, 2015, 10:04:16 pm »
I am not new to machine polishing as a whole. I have machined my car under supervisor of a friend who details a fair few cars.
I want to invest in my own kit.

I'm considering a Dodo Juice Spin Doctor v2, Hexlogic Pads, but I cannot afford the 3M polishes I have used before.

Can somebody recommend some polishes.

Pads that will be used are all hexlogic (Orange, White, Black) ones.

The 3M polishes are a bit old school, I would use Menzerna FG400 on an orange pad, that probably won't need refining but if it does then sonax finishing or megs 205 are good options.

If proberly use Menzerna 2500 and a white hexlogic pad , as Vw paint is super tough and feel the fg400 is better suited for very light swirls only.

The fg400 is one of their harshest polishes. On bad cars I use either that it Rupes UHS

5 different people using the same polish will get different results.

I found on a DAS6 Pro FG400 on an orange pad with a slow arm speed was good enough and also left no holograms on OE paint.

We use loads of different polishes, mainly Scholl and I really like the S3 Gold (and the XXL one) and S40, a good combination. S17+ is good too but takes a bit of time to get used to. Don't like S20...

And always use a strong IPA or eraser wipe down to check for results :)

Perfect, I was aiming to paid Orange Pad with FG400 / White with PF2300 / Black with SF4000 or PF4500.

I'l have a look at the Scholl polishes you mentioned above.

IPA wise, any old IPA do, as long as its diluted to 15% IPA / 85% Water? Wheres the best place to get this from?

Megs 105 & 205 are brilliant. Very versatile.

Just buy the IPA from CYC and mix it about 1/6.
I prefer using Eraser, it smells nicer, doesn't stink and I find sometimes with IPA wipedown it doesn't remove everything and rather just smears it around on occasion, depends how sticky the paint is.
