Slack gearchange
« on: November 21, 2014, 09:59:48 am »
Hi,

I am a new GTI owner previously coming from an Audi A4. I absolutely love the car apart from the gearchange. There seems to be quite alot of play on the stick so if it's in neutral or in gear I can wobble the stick about about 2cm each way compared to my Audi which was on 20K more the stick was like new with mm of play.

I have read this topic: http://www.r32oc.com/topic/43306-loose-gearshifter-easy-fix/ and it can apparently be fixed by a new shift assembly bearing. Worth a try or am I expecting a bit much from 100K car?

Thanks

Phil

To note it engages gears absolutely fine.

Yeap, that can't help. also get a short shifter, 42 Draft Designs shifter bushes and see if Alex at AKS has one of his shifter bracket bush sets for sale.

Alll the info on all those parts and where to get in my build thread, possibly page 1.

Ordered one of these to try, fingers crossed, it's a very cheap fix if it is. Less than £3!!!!! :jumping:

Definitely going to give this a try too... did you buy online or TPS / VW Parts Desk?

I ordered one today too. For £2.80 it's worth a shot! I'll update with my results.

Fitted it tonight, less than 3 quid from the main dealer. Bit of a pain to fit on your own, you need two sets of hand to wiggle the gear lever whilst pushing the bushing but I got there in the end. Think it needs a bit more lube as the lever doesn't self centre any more but the gear change is improved

I fitted mine today as well, absolute bitch of a job on your own, in the end I had to limp in 3rd gear to my local garage and get them to sort it! Maybe it's an easier job on the mk4 because none of the other guys had issues. My shift has improved too and it's much more precise and solid feeling than before. That's interesting you say yours isn't self centring because that's the with mine. If I shift it over to the right it pretty much stays there. I didn't have any grease so I will try that as well.
