Steering wheel removal - Clips are stuck
« on: May 23, 2015, 03:23:03 pm »
I've been in the process of putting the gti back to standard. The last remaining thing to come of is my mk6r MFSW. I have tried with a forum member off of here and we fought with it for over an hour. When putting the flat head in to ease of the retaining clips for the rear of the airbag they don't pop off, they move but they don't actually release the airbag or spring off.

So need some top tips if anyone has them, why wont it give? using the same technique on my original steering wheel is working. So i know im doing the right thing, how can i persuade it off?

I use a short flat headed screw driver and twist it out and pull on the airbag at the same time.

See my vid on YouTube.  Hope it helps

The mk6 wheel doesn't only use the metal clips either side of wheel,  when you push it hard into position 4 white plastic locating lugs hold it really tightly in place,  so when removing upon twisting the metal clips out,  you will need to really give the side your working on a good tug,  it will start to come,  then when you do the other side,  try to keep the first side from clipping itself back in,  then wiggle side to side and off it comes,  once again it's not just metal clips that hold it in,  give it a good wiggle / tug and it will come
Loads of extra's and retro fits.

cheers for the responses guys! I didn't wanna go yanking away at it thinking it would break the clips or something. Wasn't aware there was more holding it on! All the videos i had sen they seemed to come off without much harm.

Will give this another blast  :happy2:
