« on: April 08, 2015, 07:21:38 pm »
Hello, just about to purchase a golf gti dsg 2006 60k miles with full vwsh from a non vw garage-. The engine sounds a bit noisey alomost like a diesel. Not sure if normal as their ex vw mechanic is saying or will need it sorting.? Any idea of cost to fix as have put down a deposit and realy want the car.

I think its normal. I think its the injectors, if you get inside the car - you can hear the tick of the engine which makes it sounds like a diesel. If you gently feather the accelerator then the ticking should speed up and turn into a hum (disappear pretty much). You need to do it very gently to hear it.

You can hear the ticking increase when revs are increased and vice versa

But I'm new to this, worth waiting for some second opinions!

hi mate, check out this thread

http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,93428.0.html

I had a similar diesel sound, so much so you could hear it in the cabin, so I had the chain, tensioner and cam adjuster all changed.

The old chain had definitely stretched and the tensioner had clearly visible signs of wear. The car is serviced and maintained by VW at there recommended intervals, so how VW could say to me that the noise was normal is beyond me

Hope this helps

So much for keeping it standard!

@GTi-Andy What do you think of my noise?

I'm not sure if I've been listening to the wrong noise in the links in the thread you linked, but the tick I can hear in the links is still there after the cam chain, adjuster etc. has been replaced suggesting it is just the injectors.

If it is just the inectors, am I right in thinking the tick would speed up into a continuous hum when you feather the accelerator, or would this happen if it was the chain and adjuster etc.
