Self centering steering not working ( new rack)
« on: May 31, 2015, 09:34:00 pm »
Apologies for opening a new topic but need answer quickly.

New steering rack fitted to my  MK5 GTI. It has fixed the knocking   sounds but got the car back as I need it for tomorrow morning but outstanding issue is the steering wheel light on the dash ( needs resetting in told) but more pressing is the steering wheel does not self centre and the steering wheels more floaty.

Felt very weird driving my  car like this , quick google comes up as Caster needs adjusting, any other thoughts. Returning the car tomorrow PM.

I was told a tracking was done but what
Could be cause the lack self centering.

I would be looking for someone with VCDS tool to carry out some testes and then adaption/ basic settings as per the Rosstech guide

Many thanks for the link.

So software does play part in the self centering as i was not sure. Does look more involved that i though it would be and there is a procedure for post control module replacement. Im told along with the Rack an additional loom was needed.

Not having much luck.

Car was scanned with an Autologic machine and was able to get the steering wheel light off but now i have the ABS and Traction light on. We went through the Angle sensor reset procedure and cleared codes but keeps saying (Steering Angle Sensor had an implausible signal).

The Rack is a VW part new but needed a loom/adpater to get it to work. I have the car with me while they try to sort out next step ( replace rack again possible ) .

The Steering assist has been enabled so now i have the GTI steering feel back and returns to centre correctly. but i have the two light on the dash, Im tempted to take the car to someone with VCDS to see if that may be able to help. So only the rack has been changed (new Gen 3 rack with additional loom)

Well its all been sorted, New rack installed and recoded correctly. Took Autologic support to come up with a recoding procedure and also a software flash that we had to wait for.

All working fine no knocking or screaching and GTI feel back. Now for new tyres and Cambelt/ Waterpump. Until the next drama.
