VCDS - Error help - P0016 / P0441
« on: June 06, 2015, 12:26:55 pm »
Hi all,

Just wondering what the folllowing issues may be with my engine? They have repeatedly come back after clearing them and then 150 miles of driving. They will sometimes clear by themselves after say 200 miles of driving, but most times I have cleared them using VCDS.

I think the engine is slightly louder in terms of diesel sound than when I first picked it up last year, but nothing abnormal.

Would love to be able to take this to my mechanic and just tell him what to work on!  :happy2:

Evap is very common, usually the charcoal filter or the valve

As for thhe other 2 - It sounds like the camshaft adjuster is not doing its job. Log measuring block 91 (i think) and it will give you a specified and actual for the camshaft position. They should follow and match each other (give or take a degree). Post the screenshots/logs if unsure. Theres an output test and basic setting to run to see if it helps

That's great regarding the Evap. Will get a part ordered soon!

For the camshaft adjuster - I've been reading up big time on this to get an understanding of it. You were bang on with block 91 - but after driving with it, my friend couldn't see a big deviation between the actual and specified (apart from minor fluctuations, especially when applying load).

The graph that VCDS produces is largely useless to me as I'm a bit clueless.

If I post a video of what VCDS outputs and its graph, might you be able to say whether it's on point?
In my opinion, it does sound dervy, but no where near as bad as I've heard older AXX engines (mine is BWA). Looked into camshaft chain/adjuster replacement and while it is expensive, it's something I would do give myself peace of mind that the engine isn't about to go pop.

FYI, my cam follower was moderately worn after 100k miles, if that is of any use to you.

Any advice (and all given so far...) greatly appreciated!

Judging by the fault frequency, it's an intermittent fault. No graph needed, just a log of the measuring block, it produces a .CSV file with the data. If it is intermittent it may be hard to capture the data at the right time. Could try clearing them to see how quickly they come back

The injectors are very 'ticky' if there is such a word, and the fuel pump can make a slight tapping sound, but the engine itself should be fairly quiet. There shouldnt be any loud rattles or knocking noises. Plenty of Youtube videos to demonstrate the noise made from a slack chain
