Slight misfire at 4k when on boost
« on: September 24, 2015, 10:20:22 am »
Hi,

Another new owner question.

I seem to have a slight misfire at about 4k when under full throttle.

The car is running stage 2+ with all supporting modifications, it has APR HPFP, new coil pack and new injector 2 all by awesome gti and all within the last 12months plus it had new NGK BKR8EIX plus 18 months ago.

All modifications have been carried out at awesome gti and the info above plus a lot more have all been obtained from the folder of receipts I have with it.

Anything I should be looking for/at?

Thanks in advance

Shouldn't you be runniing the BKR7 plugs instead of the 8s?

Was it only the 1 coil pack replaced?
Replace all 3 others

It totally depends sometimes you can go without any issues for 100k and sometimes like me you just end up buying some duds.
I have a set of those coil packs in my loft as they just started failing as soon as the car got to temp so in total they only covered about 14 miles. I replaced mine with bosch and had no issues since.

I also recommend you use the BKR7 plugs

log for misfires with VCDS (or polar FIS) to identify the cylinder and it'll either be plugs, coils or injectors.

To test for coilpack failure - log, identify the cylinder of the misfire and swap the coilpack with another existing one to see if the misfire moves with it.

I had a similar misfire problem recently (on a K04'd BWA) and ended up changing the plugs (which were only about 10k old) to a fresh set of BKR7s and its running perfectly again  :happy2:

The part number for the coil pack on the receipt is for:

OEM Red 'R8' Ignition Coil Pack Set for 2.0TFSI / 2.0TSI
Quick Find Code: AWS17805
Part Number: ECS-ES2065380
Price Inc. VAT: £84.99

Also cylinder 2 injector was replaced (at awesome) Sept 2014 after going in the a misfire > this was also after the coilpack had been fitted (at awesome) June 2014.

The cold running BKR8 plugs were fitted (at awesome) April 2014.

I've only had the car a couple of weeks and I'm perhaps over picky a bit OCD but I like things just right > the car has obviously had some pennies spent on it and all by awesome gti but I didn't do it/didn't have it done so I always like to know whats what, coming from various cars (52 others) mainly Jap its all relatively new to me, the VW anyway.

So from the above:
Coil pack > HLCST - you binned yours as they started failing at temp
Plugs > get some BKR7 plugs

Thanks all for replying so far  :happy2:

Yeah the car started to misfire so I went to see my mechanic who checked them when it was cold and there was no issues but as the car got hotter they just started failing so I went to eurocarparts the following morning and put in some bosch packs.
Also I should have mentioned I'm running NGK PFR7B plugs not the BKR7 plugs which have been better than any other I've used
since going stage 2

I would really recommend identifying the problem before spending more cash. You should really log the car for misfires as your first step. This is fairly simple using vcds and even easier using a polar FIS.

If you have a highline cluster, I would highly recommend acquiring a Polar box. This is because 1) it's awesome, and 2) it provides so much live data on screen and can help identify your misfires.

I would also say this is a very very slight misfire on idle to....

So if going to get a 7 plug it should be NGK PFR7B?

Mine: (that I can see and have receipts for)
APR stage 2+ software
Airtec stage 2 IC
Forge twintake
APR HPFP
Milltek Turbo back inc Milltek Hi-Flow CAT and downpipe - too quiet!
VWR 360mm 6 piston BBK inc spacers
Single Mass FW conversion
Stage 3 clutch
Whiteline Anti_Lift
18" BBS Pescara - fancy changing them 19" BBS CH
Retro fit Xenons

I can only talk about my opinions and experiences with my car, other members will have totally different opinions and experience many different results but with my car running the BKR7 plugs I had very slight misfires that weren't a huge issue but bugged me. Since installing the PRF7B vcds is showing no faults at all :happy2:

Hi,

What exactly are "vcds and even easier using a polar FIS" and are they expensive?

Ok so I haven't got highline display and correct me if I'm wrong but VCDS is diagnostic equipment and is quite pricey?

A new genuine VCDS cable is about £270 delivered to your door. Check the VCDS register to see if anyone is local to you that may be able to assist with logging & scanning your car.

Based on your mods - performance seems to be high on the agenda. I would thoroughly recommend getting a highline and then buying an auto-polar box (through AKS). It gives you so much live data through the highline display.

I have both, and am based in Kent. If you're local, I'd be happy to help you. You mentioned 'Awesome GTI', so I've assumed that you're at the other end of the country.

To be honest I got the car like this and the previous owner religiously used awesome gti which I've have verified by awesome themselves, I on the other hand am bang in the middle, near Northampton.

As I seem to have a well spec'd car my agenda is to now make it as neat and tidy as possible, perhaps look at the handling side of things to now compliment the mods and amount of money the previous owner spent on it.

I'm still shocked that someone could justify spending well over £2k just for front brakes :surprised:

I'll check the register for anyone local  :happy2:
