Edition 30 DSG jerkiness

Hi guys

I recently purchased an edition 30 with the DSG box and I think it has a broken mechatronic unit, the car seems to kangaroo quite a bit at low speeds when setting off from standstill when in D mode, this only happens when I apply the throttle and only when the car seems to warm up.

From cold the car is okay and once its been driven for around 10 mins it starts to jerk when setting off in gear 1 and 2. I have also felt it jerk when your slowing down and the car changes down gears.

The strange thing about the car is that once it is in manual mode it doesnt jerk at low speeds and is perfect.

The car has done 68K miles and the DSG box oil has been changed at 40K.

Does it sound like my mechatronic unit is on the way out?

A good fault scan is always a good start. Does it do the same thing in reverse and in Sport mode?

I think the best thing to do is get the oil changed again and a dsg reset.  If it's no better you might need the mechatronic unit refurbished.

I would second a DSG reset as mine was a bit jerky when drove mine after 1st purchase and a reset sorted it out

I have had it checked out today by a friend who works at Audi, the car was scanned for errors and none were found. My friend said that it seems normal as these DSG boxes are not the smoothest and he said to adapt my driving to the car. This doesn't seem correct at all and I'm sure there is major fault with the box.

The car is very jerky in reverse and it does the same in sport mode. I have noticed now that it makes a clunk sound when changing from 2nd to 1st at low speeds such as slowing down for traffic lights.

I have the option to return the car to the garage if I'm not happy with it so I may just do that unless I can get a VW warranty for reasonable money and then claim for a repair.

It's not normal. A properly working DSG box is smooth as butter with no jerking or kangarooing. If you want to keep the car then try to get the garage to sort a repair out. If not, give it back, get a refund and find another car.

The fault could also be caused by worn clutch packs rather than the mechatronic unit.

Fyi the VW warranty is arround 330-400 a year for that sort of mileage or was when I purchased, depending if you wanted no excess. Although I'm not sure how soon you could claim.

Did you done basics settings??dsg mechatronic from long term use need a full reset through vag-com(basic settings) this might be help.have change oil recently??

Im not so sure a DSG reset will cure it, the jerking is pretty violet and is more like kangarooing at low speeds which is very obvious to the passengers.

It seems to jerk when the car changes down gears and once coming to a stop the change from 2nd to 1st is clunky and you can hear a knocking noise when the car changes down. When the car changes down gears you can feel the changes from 3rd to 2nd and 2nd to 1st the most, these downshifts can be felt even when in manual mode.

One thing I noticed is that when the car is kangarooing at low speeds the revs fluctuate in line with the jerking, its like the car is misfiring at low speeds.

Im pretty sure its a serious issue and not just a software reset and oil change, most likely to be a new clutch pack.

I found that a VW warranty costs £650 so if the garage will refund some money for a repair I will go for that and then just claim on the warranty.

If you're getting knocking noises as well then that could be being caused by the Dual Mass Flywheel.  Having already been down the road of replacing my DMF twice as well as a DSG gearbox rebuild with new clutch packs and bearings I'd advise you to get it checked by a gearbox specialist.

Personally, I'd return the car and look for another that doesn't have any issues.

A little off topic but 650 sounds expensive for the warrnsty. Was that for a year and did you do it over the phone or in the dealership? I found the phone initially better but the dealer matched their price.

Just to update I took the car to a VW specialist in London and they said that the mechatronics unit is faulty but they couldnt tell me how much it would cost to repair, so I have since returned the car to the garage I purchased it from
