HELP car wont start
« on: December 20, 2015, 12:52:29 am »
Ok i'm a little concerned now. Its my diesel jetta bkd engine

Car hasnt been used for a few days. Tonight jumped in it to start up. Cranked it, it fired up then immediatley died and now wont fire up and just cranks. Have re flashed the ecu back to standard. ECU seems fine.

VCDS is showing no faults! battery voltage is 12.09v so first job is to charge the battery overnight

Be careful as if it's turning over very fast and not normal you could have a timing belt failure but this is not 100%. but a warning for you.

Yup i thought that too. And thinking about it now when it did start the first time (very briefly)  the first couple of turns it did struggle

Unclip the cover and a quick check will resolved that worry  :happy2: replaced a good few of belts on the bkd engine but not broken ones. Must say the belts are made of a stronger material so unlikely to be damaged

Thanks r5gtt

Going to check it just to be safe. Will make sure it hasnt slipped a tooth or anything too. Its just very strange :D I read somewhere else about low battery voltage potentially causing issues so when i whip the battery out in a bit im going to check timing belt

Yes better safe than sorry and I'm also doubting it would slip a tooth as not heard of any such problems with the bkd engine and belt failure. don't prove me wrong lol
Hope it's just a case of charging the battery as it's winter time and weak batteries for some.

No worries V3trox, do let us know how you get on.

When you turn the ignition key to position two can you hear the tank fuel pump prime - it will only be for seconds but this would be high on my list of favourite failure items and would give the none starting fault.

Yes fuel pump primes. VCDS doesnt show any immobiliser codes (or any codes)

I havent even had a chance to look over it today. Been busy with work today.

Ok so no luck on the battery replacement. It probably needed changing anyway.

Fuel pump is good. Primes and runs fine using vcds.

Timing belt is still attached but no timing marks on the cam gears so will have to do it the old fashioned way when i get some spare time.

Anyone got any ideas? I guess a compression test wouldnt be a terrible idea.

Fuel filter?. can't remember if these have a primer???

Take the fuel line in off and turn ignition to see if fuel is pumping out.

Spray some easy start into the intake pipe and if it starts your problem could be the camshaft sensor?.
Also do a fuel pump test to bring the pump to prime and you might get lucky

You think a blocked filter? The pump does prime when turning the key. Also the ecu recognises my key and immo so i can deffo rule that out.

All fuses look intact as well

EDIT: Also I have primed the system using vcds as well

Get some easy start in there mate, bet it will start lol

Okay pumps working then?.

Try the above  Sometimes it's a fuelling issue as ive had the odd one causing this issue when I used to work with a 60 year old bloke who knew his diesel engines but now deceased so here's hoping I'm right.

You'll need someone to either turn the engine over whilst you spray or vice versa.

Take the top off the fuel filter and look inside the housing to see if it's filled to about 2cm off the top would be my next move if that's ok - timing cover off and check if the belt jumped when you set TDC.
