DSG Fault code 17100 input speed sensor
« on: January 03, 2016, 11:17:32 pm »
Hi all. I keep getting the same fault code come back after a few code clearings and it's bugging me. Car drives fine other than the code.

17100 - Transmission input speed sensor (G182)
Fault frequency: 255

On Wikipedia it says it could be a loose connection or something? Anyone had this before or any idea? Hoping it's not the mechatronic about to go.

Thanks.

Your problem maybe due to a faulty sensor inside the box.
Here is the sensor location.

Number 1?

Looks like gearbox will have to be opened up if it is the sensor inside and not the wiring. How much would VW charge just to open the gearbox cover and replace it? Not cheap I'm guessing.

Sorry yes it's number 1

I know someone who paid £450 for this service as it involves fresh oil and dsg filter, sealant for fitting the cover back on and that's not VW so your guess is as good as mine I'm afraid.

Okay thanks. Gonna keep an eye on it as 500 isn't a back breaker as an independent vag garage would probably be a better bet.

Just an update to this...

Fault code still comes up, even after clearing it 2 times and scanning about a week later. Car still drives fine and changes gear ok.

What should I do? Try and trade in because it might get worse? Or just hope that it's just a sensor throwing a hissy fit most of the time? I read somewhere that the gearbox uses a secondary sensor of the first one malfunctions as a backup, but can't remember where I read it.

I couldn't advise on what to do regards trading it in as someone else will be buying your problem after trading it.
If it's not causing any drivability issues you might be able to just drive it until it goes wrong and then worry about what to do.

Hi mate sorry to hijack but the garage have also just had this fault code come up after I've taken it to them after the DSG has been juddering between up shifts. Just wondering if you have had any luck on this?

I've not scanned the car for a while but car still drives ok even though the code is probably still there. I monitored all the sensors in the box and they all tally up to eachother in regards to speed and rpm etc so I'm miffed to what it could be. Maybe something tiny causing the code. The sensor mentioned in the fault code has been monitored my be during a drive and it's reading the cog speed fine too.

If yours is that bad to drive then maybe go to an independent garage and get them to swap out the sensor and give it a fluid change as box sump would be off anyway. I phoned a garage and they said the sensor was built into the mechatronic unit which isn't true so make sure you get a garage that knows what they are talking about lol.

Ok thanks. Well strange enough this has happened straight after my DSG service.

The garage has quoted me £260 if it is the sensor but I'm going to a DSG specialist tomorrow to see if they can shed some more light.

It could be the wiring loose or the sensor being intermittent.

Where are you based? As 260 doesn't seem too bad for that job.

I know I was pleasantly surprised! I'm based on Bristol. He did say that was only a rough price though.
