Not reading 5 pages, sorry to hear about the motor though... I've had this a few times when I've fitted new tyres to the front, but ESP has always saved it, was yours switched off?

Yep.  Sunday is a time i like to have a little play as the roads are quieter and i always turn the ESP off, otherwise it's just boring as the traction control just holds you back, maybe though, on that day, that would not of been a bad thing...;)

I hear that mate, if it's dry it goes off, but in the winter wet it's always on, saved my ass a few times.

I have the following upgraded on my GTI:

MFD2 > RNS 510 with Kuftatec bluetooth
Standard front and rear GTI valances > Ed 30 front and rear valances
Mk6 OEM rear parking sensors added
OEM xenons added
Ed30 Pescaras all around

I haven't declared any of them because they were all OEM upgrades largely. Should I have?

Will be doing a Stage 1 map later this year when I find an insurer that supports mods at a reasonable price.

I'd say 99% of people changing these few bits wouldn't declare. Not because they're trying to be sly and not pay the extra premium but out of innocence.

On the phone to my insurer now.

Apparently 17" Monza upgrade to 18" Pescaras isn't allowed. I can only upgrade by at least 2". So 17" or 19"!

This is insane...... :signLOL:
:stupid:

Bizarre, so they don't insure all those Mk5 GTI's with 18 inch wheels then.
:stupid:

After talking to them for well over an so far across 3 phone calls they have given me 3 reasons so far, each knocked down so they come up with another:

1. it will affect the handling of the car too much to move from 17" to 18". 17" to 19" is fine.
2. the wheels in conjunction with the bodywork changes will make the car look like a boyracer car (errr... it's already a GTI, so it already fits your stupid (and somewhat sexist) terminology - and I'm 30 looking for a nicer looking car, not 16 trying to collect the ladies at my local turning circle! ).
3. back to safety. It will affect the balance and alignment. Surely it's the wheel itself that is balanced and then alignment is not altered by a wheel?

When pushed harder and asked for common sense to be applied, I have been given "our underwriters carried out analysis on accidents vs people who upgraded their wheels by 1" - they decided to block people from doing it as there was a trend occurring".

Yet that trend stops with 2" bigger?

They don't want to hear about the fact that these are factory-supplied wheels from an Edition 30 or even the obvious one of the 18" Monzas being a factory option. It's literally the most illogical thing I've heard in a long time.

I asked would my car have a claim voided if I fitted them - the fella on the phone is dead on and says "listen, these calls are recorded so I can't say what you should do (hint hint, fit them and never worry)". Then I said surely the notes on my policy are now taken up with wheel-related nonsense, so the first thing they would check to get out of a claim would be wheels... he agreed that I would be stupid to fit them now.

So, anyone got a set of 17" BBS CH for sale?  :ashamed: Christ on a stick.... if only I didn't open my big mouth.

Can't you change your insurance to another company in the future? One with better conditions to modded cars?

Yeah of course - rang Greenlight today but I was declined instantly as my named driver is a journalist. Tony is on holiday at the moment, so will call back next week when he's back in as he knows she's not a paparazzi and does desk work.

Did a bunch of quotes through comparethemarket.com and it offered 1 quote at £11,000. I think I'll keep trying with the current insurer.

Trying to phone Adrian Flux at the moment!

Should I declare factory options like 18" Monza wheels and dnx521, highline clocks, mfsw? What about interior LEDs, eibach lowering springs?

lol no probs.

I would probably just try and cancel your policy and insure with someone else tbh, as the others have said.

The guy on the phone was absolutely right when saying hint hint. If you'd fitted the wheels that would have been it as no one would be the wiser as the 18" are a factory option for someone buying the car from new and opting for larger wheels. you could fit the ed30 body bits and that wouldn't go against you in a claim as they are agsin a factory option which the insurance will never find out or even question for that matter as they are genuine parts.   :happy2:

I've had these conversations with insurance companies over the years regards factory fitted extras and it's a no brainer.  :signLOL:

Gentlemen, try AIB Insurance. I've just retained my business with them for the second year running. Apart from my GTI DSG, I have another performance car which is group 50 and their premiums were amazing for where I live, in Ilford, Essex.

They specialise in performance cars including Ferraris, Porsche etc.

I thought the top insurance group was a 20/20b?
