Someone really needs to contact dvla and get this car fully registered as this is what traders usually do when they import a car into the UK.
I had this issue when trying to insure one of my import jap cars as to how where and when was it imported over as it's not on put system and they are much more to insure than a UK spec car as with extra bits and modifications blah di blah blah for example jap imports.

there are a few import GTIs around normally they are registered as a 2007 but actually are a 2005/2006. mine is a import from dubai registered as a 2007 but is a right hand drive. the V5 is pretty much the same as yours too. normally you will find that these come with the AXX engine. in terms of getting parts just ask for the AXX engine parts as usual if ordering from main dealer or elsewhere. i haven't had any trouble to date to be honest.

my car was well spec'd when i got it (although i was like your mum not aware it was a import till later) - it came with self levelling xenons, sunroof, heated folding mirrors with puddle lights, rear parking sensors, drivers electric seat and a few other bits i can't remember. see my build thread for more info

Mine is a Japanese import, no differences apart from mine seemed to come with every optional extra going and colour coded side skirts and rear bumper similar to edition 30 except lowest part is gloss black more like r32 colour colour scheme but without the centre exhausts but I think it looks sweet. Costs about extra £150 a year more than a normal gti does is about the only negative
