Intercooler advice
« on: February 22, 2016, 08:48:36 pm »
Going r tech stage 2+ this summer

s:
Evoms intake
Decat downpipe
Bcs sports system (r32 exit)
Audi r8 coilpacks
R tech twin heat shield
R tech full pcv delete
Rs4 valve
Loba hpfp

Now is an s3 intercooler gunna be enough or is it going to be restrictive? Should I try do a wellycooler install? I've read that the crash bar needs cutting down and you have to make your own brackets

Go for a Peron, Airtec stage 2 or Wagner if you want a bolt on solution. Go wellycooler if you don't mind cutting your bumper and crash bar.

You can see other people's projects to see which solution they have and what results they got.

So s3 is gunna hold me back ?

Yeh the peron is 550 and wellycooler 270ish
So half the price but like you said it's the hassle of cutting my crash bar ect. The ed30 is a weekend car so I have time on my side to fit a wellycooler, or do I just save up for another month..

Yes keep me updated mate! How much the peron cost you? And is the peron really easy to fit? For what it's worth I might save a little longer and go for a peron the hassle fitting a wellycooler sounds too stressful lol

Wellycoolers seem to be producing the best figures at the moment and it's the cheapest option too but like you said you have to cut down the crash bar

This tiny little chargecooler helps the Merc A45 AMG make 381hp!

I might look into it.  I remember back in the day when MK2 1.8T conversions swallowed up all the Merc sprinter van intercoolers.  They sold like hot cakes because they were cheap, then Merc got wind of it and doubled the price of them!   So let's get these chargecoolers snapped up now!

The sidemounts wasn't very successful on the 1.8T engines if you remember. I think where the merc would benefit on this setup is that it doesn't have the long pipes from the Turbo to the throttle body.

Personally I'm just going to get a twintercooler as it fits easy and wont take long to fit. it will flow more than I need anyway powerwise

Yeah the 1.8T side mounts were literally made for standard boost and no more.  The TFSI front mounts can cope a lot better with the boost turned up.

Yep, short boost pipes = much more responsive!

That Merc one is a air-water though (aka 'chargecooler'), which is much better at cooling than air-air, hence it's tiny size.

Probably something I would do if going big turbo but with K03/K04 any of the aftermarket front mounts should be fine.  Is the Audi one worth it as I keep hearing it's only a tiny bit bigger than the Golf's?

I have a copy of that IC from DsD for £300. All made in China. For that money I'd buy another.
