What next?

Not had this GTi long, 05 plate, 75k miles, all serviced through VW. Notice when going into reverse it doesn't seem to "bite" straight away and can sometimes jolt back, is this a sign the DSG clutch is on its way out?

Only owned a 15 plate A3 S-tronic before, so not sure how long these clutches are meant to last etc?

I wouldn't say so mate. Mine first done this when I bought it. I found out that the DSG box gets used to how the person drives it.
I have mine reset on VAGCOM and was a little bit jerky to start but after a few miles of me driving it the way I wanted to it started to smoothen out.

I got told this was the best thing to do aswell as a service on the box when I first got it by a VW specialist

Mine was exactly the same when i bought it - full DSG reset via Vagcom, new fluid & filters and its silky smooth. Tried a work coleagues car recently and his is jerky as hell! He has to put the car in neutral first before putting it in reverse - that seems to smooth his out a little, but he has no idea what Vagcom is!

Appreciate the replies guys, that's put my mind at ease! It is due for its DSG oil change, and also due a full service, I'll maybe see if someone can do the DSG reset then while I'm getting this done. Didn't even know that was possible!

You just need someone with vcds.  The instructions are in the diy sticky section.

Ive done mine twice in the 1 and half years of owning it. Always makes a difference

Not a fan of doing needless resets. The last time I did mine it made no difference. The DSG constantly learns your driving style, it's fuzzy logic.

The best thing to smoothen uptake of the clutch is to wait for the clutches to bite themselves (if you're not on an incline). Basically, let your foot off the brake and wait for it to creep. If you're on an incline, keep the throttle position constant, don't suddenly back off and then on again. It just confuses the gearbox. Stay consistent so it knows what you want.

The clutches will likely last the lifetime of the car, as they are bathed in oil (less heat = less wear) and user error is virtually removed.

it's important not to overthink it too much. it's just a semi auto gearbox at the end of the day :)

it's important not to overthink it too much. it's just a semi auto gearbox at the end of the day :)

I've found that treating it like an auto is not ideal. It doesn't behave like an auto with a torque converter.

Re the fuzzy logic on the DSG, after some reading, I think you have a point. But it's a contentious issue. Some say it exists (including some knowledgable folks on here), some say it doesn't. To a certain extent, it has to exist to adapt the clutches at a mechanical level. In my experience, it does exist and adapts to your driving :happy2:

You can treat it however you like but it doesn't justify the clunk and I'd say check your mounting and dog bone bushes.

Just an update on this, had the DSG oil and filter service done today, literally a different car. I'm almost certain the diverter valve is needing replaced, but it's genuinely 100 times better than it was, so much smoother.

Just to add to this that I agree that the DSG seems to adapt to how you drive it.
When I first got mine it seemed to be forever wanting to change down on a dual carriageway at the slightest prod of the accelerator, got quite annoying really.
Now it's happy to pull in 6th unless I really give the pedal a good press.

Theres a definite lack of boost on the car, makes a lot of noise, but doesn't really seem to go.

I have many things on my to do list but no time or daylight hours to do them.
Yes definitely check the dv as this is the weakest link with our cars.

You're lucky you have many receipts as I had one from the crook trader who sold me the car saying yes they have receipts and I'll get copies which I had to fight for over a month to get. wish someone  :slap: them for me.
