New to vw gti
« on: March 02, 2016, 08:27:12 pm »
Hi all , Great forum here just registered and going to take forever to read through the threads on here, after getting a little bored with my bmw and all its little niggles the other week got i my first gti its an 05, Tornado red 5 door .

I'm happy with the car and plan to do a few mods but not sure where to start, i'll gradually do them bit by bit ,  its just got to 90 thousand miles and been fully serviced every year , last service was jan last year and due a service which i'll be doing this weekend , going to change plugs, oil and filters , which oil should I use as I've seen 5/30 and 5/40 recommended also not wure which plugs to get.

The timing belt and water pump were changed 3 years ago and 30 thousand miles so i'll be doing them in a couple of months when the weather gets better, is there anything else I should look at changing over due to the mileage, also would it be worth getting something like a terra clean done on it,

Welcome mate. There are a couple of posts on the terra clean on here and not sure it will make a difference.

Also have a look at this. A couple of things to look for.

Welcome buddy!

As said above terra clean is abit of a waste of money on our cars. Plenty of information on here about it.

Your car looks nice and tidy.

Thanks for the reply mate , read through that link and to be honest I think there fine although for the price would look at changing them over in the future as weak points and as preventative maintenance.

Read the post on here and other forums about the terraclean and will probably just use a bottle of Wynn's Petrol EGR Cleaner and a bottle of Injector Cleaner instead and save a few quid, whilst im doing the air filter i'll clean the maf with maf cleaner.

would this oil be good  http://www.halfords.com/motoring/engine-oils-fluids/engine-oil/mobil-1-esp-5w-30-oil-5l

Yer that oil is fine mate. 5w30 is the factory recommended oil and tuners recommend 5w40 if your car is mapped.

As for spark plugs, get Bosch double platinum plugs or ngk iridium

I'd also recommend changing the fuel pump cam follower for piece of mind

Oh and it's recommended to use vpower/momentum super unleaded type fuel with these cars if you didn't no that already

Car looks great mate. Great buy!

I would have the inlet valves cleaned manually, it'll do far more than Terraclean ever would, trust me, I've had both and I doubt they've been touched in 90k.

As others have said, iridium plugs are the way forward.
As is V-Power or Momentum. Basically 99ron fuel and a very sound piece of advice being replace the cam follower lobe. VW say the fuel filter should be a lifetime part, but that's BS as many of us know.

Check for boost leaks, but I'm sure the diverter valve will have seen some stick. It's up to you whether you go for a revised OEM one or an aftermarket part like Forge.

I personally use Mobil One 0w40. I have done for 70,000 miles. It offers better cold start up protection than any other oil and better viscosity than any other 5w oil.

Of all the flushes and I must have tried half a dozen, nothing does what it says on the tin quite like Forte Advanced Motor Flush. I change oil filter and plugs every 3k and every 6k I run one of these flushes. Also  the PCV breather valve is a naff design, VW did do a revised edition, failing that you can pick up BSH or Forge ones, I've had the former on my car for 60k and it sorted a very lumpy idle, as well as aiding boost issues.

Hope all that helps.

Thanks for the reply's and the comments guys, was busy with work this past weekend so only had time to give it a quick clean.

This weekend I'm going to the do the oil and filter ,plugs , diverter valve and cam follower also just ordered a panel air filter on ebay so changing that, watched a few videos on youtube regarding terraclean etc and some on manually cleaning the intake valves etc now the weathers starting to pick up i'll use my bike for work and take the car of the road for a week and clean the intake and valves.
