break or fix my golf gti

hi guys

new member here just signed up to get some advice.

I bought a 3dr mk5 gti from copart a few weeks ago, it had rear quarter damage and I mistakenly presummed that was the only damage. went to collect the car and tried turning it over and wouldn't start. got it back home and did a compression test and turned out compression was down on all 4 cylinders :(
timing belt looked fine, so assuming the chains broke.

so now I'm not sure what to do with the car. I paid just over £2200 for it and the few garages that I have spoken to including statler who is local to me has advised to replace the complete engine. however after replacing the engine and having the bodywork repaired it won't be far off what a straight car would have cost and obviously mine is down as a cat D.
now I'm thinking of just breaking it and tring to recoop my money that way. it's dsg and has leathers and I'm thinking if someone's looking for a track project I could possibly get rid of the shell as well.
what do you guys think?

If you can do it yourself then I'd remove the cylinder head before anything. If it's just a snapped timing chain which is basically the same as the cambelt snapping then you won't need a complete engine. You will only need a head rebuild.

I had a head rebuilt last year from a 2.0 tfsi and it cost me £320 at a local engine builders.

If you can remove the head and refit it yourself then it would probably be less than half the cost of a full engine

doylebros if id have left the car and not taken it out of the yard i would have put it back through auction but now its going to cost me to have it delivered back to copart and i dont want to spend anymore on it tbh

again its the money factor, if it is just a head then with the bodywork itl still be close to 3k and that if everything else is ok. really annoying as thought it would be a lot easier of a process but guess its just another learning experiance.
Are mk5 gti parts in much demand at all?

You wouldn't struggle selling some of the factory upgrade parts but the engine which would make up a lot of your money back if it were in working order isn't gonna go for much not running.

Post some pictures up of the car. Also what are area you in?

i reckon you'd make pretty much all your money back breaking it. so thats what id do.  give you a good education on how it all comes apart

I can't see you making £2200 back breaking one that's got a nackered engine and panel damage.

Leather interior - £500 ish
Steering wheel - £100
Wheels depending on size, condition and condition of tyres £250-450
Complete gti front end conversion - £300 ish
Dsg gearbox £???
Faulty engine £???
Shell - scrap value (if that)

The the majority of the other parts are basically the same as all mk5 golfs which are now common in a lot of breakers yards

And then on top of all that you actually have to sell the parts which could take ages as well as having the knowledge, tools and area to do it.

If your serious about selling it then I'd possibly be interested in buying it as a complete car myself depending on price, spec, mileage, history and what the body damage is like. I would be buying it to repair not to break.

Doors, trims, roof lining, visors, interior lights "clock maybe" door modules, motors, glass, wing mirrors, bumpers, wishbones, suspension legs, brakes boot trim mat parcel shelf all money mate.

Yer all that is money. But all available off other golfs not just gti's and there plenty of other golfs breaking so why buy off you? Why not go elsewhere? And who's to say someone will actually want those parts?

And the majority of those parts will be less than £50 each.

I think you won't make your money back, you won't be miles off but it could take you 2 months of selling small bits and bobs.

I've broke cars in the past, what starts out as a good idea soon becomes a pain in the a**! The last car I broke ended up with a lot of stuff left on it.

And also advertising costs. If you use eBay then you have a listing fee and then relisting what doesn't sell, final value fee on what does, PayPal fees, posting stuff.

Have a really good think about it before you jump in to it

It is a pain on the ar** to break bits to sell as some of us halve been there at some point in our lives.

It's a suggestion or as mentioned sell it back to Co part you may lose £500 but better than a poke in the eye
