Another Windscreen Stonechip Case!
« on: March 22, 2016, 05:19:50 pm »
Bl**dy hell, On the M25 today, at 65mph(yeah rare that eh!), and a flippin stone thrown up from a vehicle in front. Such a loud crack, a wonder it didn't shatter. Couldn't see where it was at first, but it's right towards the bottom of the screen, passenger side / middle, just bordering on the dashboard.

How bad does it have to be to get a replacement screen? Does it have to be in line of driver's vision etc. Never claimed before, so don't know. Might just leave it, huh!

Get it changed, if your fully comp insurance should only be 70 quid excess. Don't forget the windscreen is a structural part of the car, not worth having any damage.

new to the forum, and first post; in at the deep end:

Please elaborate on how what could be a repairable chip can have any degree of bearing on the structural integrity of a car.

Have a read, quite common knowledge I was led to believe. Maybe I read the original post wrong but I thought that the screen had cracked, then again even if its chipped it will crack without attention.

Thanks for the comments.... Has anyone had a screen replaced?

Do they have to take much of the interior / dash apart to do it? I hate creaks / squeaks / rattles, so I'd be well p*ssed off if I go for replacement and this was to happen!

My chip is kind of like the bullet hole ones on the 'Man From Uncle Car', if anyone is old enough to remember, ha ha!

Thinking of going for repair, but will it be invisible???  Can't really see how it can be invisible, given the damage - but only about a centimetre. Hmmm.

If it's cracked then I don't think a repair will do. I've had the screen replaced on my mk5 about 18 months ago and there was no interior to be removed just the rubber strips on each side of the screen and the rear view mirror.

No, it's not cracked (yet) - a bullet hole type. I've read some right horror stories about screen replacements while researching on the tinterweb.

Think I'd rather try and get it repaired, if possible, but being only just visible over the top of the dashboard, it might be too close to the edge of the screen. I'll update......

If we got the dealers to replace the screen would they be able to get money from our insurance excess for this?.

Bump....

Anyone tried the rain x repair kit themselves, and if so was it any good. Seen a few vids, with limited success at invisible repair

I've had mine replaced on the ed30...they will take the rubber seals off at the edge of the screen from the outside & use two suction type of handles to lift the screen off...

If you pay to have it repaired you will at some point still have to pay to have it replaced. A repair is not a lifetime guarantee and as this is now part of most insurance with a low excess that doesn't affect your no claims you may as well go new. The last thing you want is it to start spreading then go in the motorway. I'm OCD with cars so to be honest it would bug the hell out of me

Just off a webchat with Autoglass. They say that you can request OEM glass, but that they will have to order it in - not really a problem for me - still bothered about if they have to take dashboard / screen pillars apart to fit, and any problems afterwards....

Also, reading some of their reviews, someone commented that they had to pay extra to get their 'Lane tracking' auto wipers and auto lights re-set - this sounded like a high end Mercedes. Will there be any re-setting to do on the GTI - I have auto lights and rain sensor wipers. Anyone know, pls?
