VWR stage 1 vs Revo stage 1
« on: January 13, 2010, 02:00:17 pm »
Having recently switched from a lovely torquey 335i, planning on getting a stage one upgrade done just to give me that little extra shove I'm missing.

Narrowed it down to the Revo or VWR maps. Former seems to offer the most power gains, and seems to have very significant support among users, however I'm quite attracted to the fact that the latter is race-proven - test beds don't come any harder!

Anybody experienced both?

Anybody have hard numbers on actual performance gains shown from both?

Anybody recommend a good Revo dealer in the south east / london area? also likely to get the gearbox map done.

thanks

Why not just ring VWR and ask what the difference is? I'm sure I'm right in saying that VWR work with Superchips as they are a title sponsor of the race series so your best bet would be comparing Revo with Superchips. There might be some small customisation, but at stage 1 I doubt there's much difference between the standard retail Superchips map and the VWR version.

The actual race maps are likely to be different again meaning the road car remaps are not quite as 'race proven' as the mechanical upgrades the VWR sell.

Only 250.1bhp - but with that noise, who cares?

No idea - I'm new to the car, hence the question!!

On the VWR site it specifically says it's exactly the same map they use in their race car...you can't make that claim unless it's factually correct unless you are very silly!

....

VWR use Superchips (VW Cup sponsor) and they are just down the road and so very practical.

I'd use Revo as their product is more easily fine tuned and they seem to have less problems according to internet posts by users.

....Which race car? They have quite a lot of them in their care. Also, I thought that the race cars had a bhp limit to comply with the VW Cup rules.

I'm a great fan of VWR but for tuning I'd go for Revo.

Some people do make very silly claims, but I agree - you can't argue with a claim like that. I am suprised though, I would've thought the race cars would run a slightly difference calibration that's better tuned for circuit racing. Clearly this is not the case, however I still can't see it being dramatically different to what Superchips offer themselves.

The only advantage to Superchips is the Bluefin handset that enables you to load and unload the map at will. It also doubles as a basic fault-code reader for diagnosing problems. But I'm inclined to agree with Robin, Revo seems to get the best write up and praise - a few people seem to have had issues with Superchips maps which has been enough to put me off.

I'm sure you'll also get a better price on the DSG remap too if you are exisiting customer or you buy both at the same time. Not to mention that they will both compliment each other.

Thanks - definitely leaning that way especially as I want the DSG remap too.

I'm assuming it's a simple plug-in-and-upload map, and therefore pretty much all dealers authorised to sell the product will be more than competent to do so, or does anyone have any specific recommendations near London?

cheers

Great, thanks. Yeah I'm not too bothered about the whole switching/loading/unloading etc....it's the kind of thing I would have loved a few years back but just don't get the time to fiddle around as much these days!!

That said, I did say when I bought the car I wasn't going to modify it at all, and that hasn't exactly lasted very long...  :signLOL:

shark perfomance do an STS handset with their maps if thats what you wantm, same functions as the bluefin handset(fault code reading, can immobiliser map, and standard map akl on the handset, and dead easy to use)

They are getting rave reviews at the moment accross a multitude of Vag vehicles and engines. priced about halfway between revo and bluefin and id say the perfomance was comparable to revo and mine is defintely better than my old bluefin map,

from what i gather about bluefin, k04 wise the problems have been with incorrect maps-dsg, non dsg etc(cant see VWR getting this wrong though) and for k03 maps its the lumpy delivery of stage 2 and 2+ maps that have been in question.(my bluefin amde 241hp249Ibft on Dyno dynamic rollers which HP wise is good, but lacking in the torque department compared to others.

If i was you id be going for REVO or as i have the shark perfomance.

last time i checked the superchips map did not allow the full potential of either the giac or revo dsg map as it requires the removal of the soft limiter which superchips didn't offer at the time which was one of the reasons i swapped to revo, would be a question to ask vwr to see if they do

what you got gti / ed30

....I knew that VWR had been assessing Revo and am glad to hear they have decided to offer it.

....I doubt it. VWR and Superchips haven't fallen out. But who knows?
