Start up noise
« on: May 28, 2016, 09:41:28 pm »
Hi guys. Iv not long had the mk5 serviced which had a oil and filter changed. Now im not sure if i heard the noise before i had it serviced bit when start it after its been sat a day or couple hours it makes a rattly sound almost like tappets after a few seconds its fine. Now is this a normal sound. My dad thinks it could be where the oil is at the bottom of the engine and when start it up after sat there for abit its abit tappy until the oil rises and lubes up the tappets etc. Hope can help

Sounds like you may need to clean the oil strainer in the sump if I'm not wrong.
Has the cam follower been replaced?.
Let's hope it's not the cam chain or warn cgain tentioner.

Have no history of cam follower being changed in paperwork

Upload a video maybe?

Had oil change which could mean gunk has sucked onto the strainer and preventing oil going to the head quick enough hence the tapping.

This can be cleaned by removing the sump to access the strainer and then remove it clean ot and refit the sump back with gasket glue only made for sumps. Dirko being VAG approved and what I use for gasket glue.

RECOMMEND a cam follower change as my this is a major engine failure if it wears out and the fuel pump starts hitting the cam lobe which has happened to many. One o read about three weeks ago and the poster needed a new cam, cam follower and pump. costly. I replaced mine not long back. Not easy by all means but can be done with the correct tools.

When we did the oil change we did a engine flush 1st also. Yea so maybe there could be some gunk init when the oil change was done and new oil installed left for abit then started and it made the clattery sound so i turned of and thought wat hell is that started again still did it but went as soon as oil got round. Isit easy to check the cam follower?

Oh noooooooo  :surprised: you should never ever use flush oil as this makes for a disaster in the engine. All the lubricated metal components will have lost there oil and the car will sound more rattly!!!

The high pressure fuel pump will need to come off and it's not easy here's a link courtesy of @ROH ECHT :signLOL: I followedit not realising who it was. a member off here :drinking:

I'm sure this is the reason why your cars tapping a lot more but if your saying it does smooth out then it could well be the oil flush. I'd still get the sump off and have a check if you thing it's more serious as there's no sound over here so harder to judge. I'm just going on your information

No worries buddy.
In your video the ticking noise goes after a few seconds and that to me sounds normal as I get the same for a few seconds in the morning and then it goes. I think it's the hydraulic lifters but nothing to worry about.
