Rear Tracking (Sawtoothing)

Hi all,

Cut a long story short I've had an advisory on my last service saying that the inner edge on my rear tyres are starting to wear quite badly (and look like a 50p) and it's causing a bearing noise in the cabin which can be quite annoying when on the motorway.

So I went to National Tyres to get it looked at and the fella said he couldn't do anything on the back because my lower suspension arms had seized solid and he couldn't get them to budge, he tried everything and there weren't budging. Firstly has anyone had this issue? And how much did it roughly cost to rectify?

Any help would be great.

Got exactly the same problem with my rear lower arms...  Alignment couldn't be set up this morning due to seized eccentric bolts in the rear wishbones.  Went to TPS and picked up two new arms and a full set of bolts - cost me £200 in parts as I want genuine to complete a full suspension overhaul. Only way to get the seized bolts out is to cut them (they are steel inside the alloy sleeve of the bush so with time corrode together solidly) as when turning with a breaker bar the sleeve is moving too.

Going to finish cutting through in the morning to replace.  Don't forget the xenon level bracket on the nearside one if you have them - fitted with rivnut inserts but can be refitted to the new arm with bolts/nylock nuts.

Yeah I have heard they can be a pig to sort. Also this was off the advice of National who was trying to get at the nut from the back of the car.

Now I took it to one of the garages I trust and he went at it from the other site and it came free, he mentioned that it has to be loosened from the front first and then the adjustments can be made from the back, he told me they are fine and that the guy who tried to do my tracking didn't know really what he was doing, anyone had this before?

So I've booked my car in at Awesome GTI for a full hunter alignment. Hopefully my rear arms will be okay, but I'll update the thread when I find out.

I read somewhere that the bearing noise can be related to knackered shocks/dampers. It's what I'm currently getting at the moment. I've replaced both rear bearings. All wheel alignment at Pro-tyre and it still makes the bearing noise. Carrying weight certainly makes it louder. So will be doing my rear shocks shortly. Hoping that will sort it!

Had the same problem as OP, thought I had a wheel bearing gone as it had the usual symptoms. Bought one in preparation so I could get it replaced, got the car on the ramp and couldn't find any problems. Tyre was like a 50p and wearing badly on the inside edges.

2 new tyres and it's a lot better, but not perfect. Looking at places to get the alignment done as soon as.

Car has had the suspension done in the last 12 months to rule that theory out...
