DSG Manua/Sport/Drive questions
« on: June 13, 2016, 01:28:04 pm »
1) If you are driving in "drive" mode and then floor it  does the gearbox and engine result in the same way as if you had been driving in "sport"?

Scenario -  at a stop in "drive" mode and you floor it. Will you get the same result in terms of speed/distance covered as if you were in "sport" mode?

2) when in "Sport" mode it seems to shift just past the redline at 7k ish, but the power peaks earlier at around 5200rpm.

Why does it not shift just after 5200rpm when the power is dying off?

3) would I be quicker to drive in manual and then shift gears just after the 5200rpm instead of waiting until the redline to shift?

Thanks

Good question,

I have manual and I probably take it up to 6K max anymore than that and the power tails off rapidly so surely you would get quicker accelartion shifting earlier on DSG and relying on the torque instead. Shifting at 7K seem ludicrous unless you have a K04.

I've always wondered if putting it in sport mode changes the throttle response etc... I'd like to know.

I can't comment on your question as I have a k04 and pulls to the red line with power. But I don't think the car takes into account boost levels as just tries to get to the red line then shift.

If I ever decide at short notice to give it some while still in 'D', I will normally override it around 6/6500, as I feel the power goes off pretty quickly with a ko3 around there, I know there is still good power to the limiter, but feel I'd be more beneficial to change around 6500 max. Different story with a ko4 I would think though as they don't run out off puff like our wee turbo does!

Sports mode is a lot quicker than D I've tried it numerous times over and over.

Power wise or just shift speed? I find sport mode annoying as you will be holding a gear then it will just downshift by itself as it thinks it clever.

I also find sport not really great, as by the time it's wanting to change 3-4 or 4-5th your well into squeaky territory to keeping your licence, so find it pointless and for this reason I use manual mode. Also, I tend not to get dsg farts in manual mode over 'd' mode, so I tend just to leave it in 'd' pretty much all the time now

Sorry the shift speed but it does piss you off when it down shifts.

When in manual mode, you still get  farts but I guess its louder at certain points in the rev range for some reason.

Sports mode is great. would be boring if it was red lining to 6th gear and still hadn't hit 70mph wouldnt it lol

i find the sports mode a waste of time.  as said above. holds gear until right before the redline which is far too late. manual mode is the best way to go. you seem to get the same quick shifts as in sport but with the control of shifting at the best time and you can also avoid the harsh downshifts from 3rd to 2nd then 1st when coming to a halt

S mode  is rubbish. No idea why anyone would use it. It's either D or Manual for me.
