Dreaded oil pressure ! STOP! Light.

Ok so recently my MK5 06 Gti needed 1L of oil to top it up, went to drive it today & the light came on. "Oil pressure low" STOP engine!
So I imediatly stopped the engine. (Is it worth mentioning my drive is uphill?)
I filled the oil on level ground btw.
So I re started the car & it didn't do it again. I stopped a few hundred yards from my house to drop my kids off & checked on here to see what it could be.
Light didn't come on again all day, the threads I read mostly said its a blocked sump return pipe/ gunked up sump, which will need sorting asap, now I'm getting it done tomorrow is there any pro tips I can give my mechanic? I read a micksgarage post on the issue which I forwarded to him.
Any tips?

Get him to check the oil pressure with a good old fashioned mechanical gauge once done in case the oil pump is the route cause

Didn't I comment on your last post saying its hopefully not a blocked oil strainer?

Anyway, looks like it is.

Since its your wife's car and you're probably not all that interested then you can get your mechanic to do it. That Micksgarage post I put up myself for anyone wanting to diy it!

That's most likely the cause and I wouldn't drive it again until it has been cleared!

Mechanic might charge around €300 for labour plus oil and filter!

Same parts either.

£300 would be a total rip off considering it will take less than an hour in a garage to change it. Get them to inspect the oil pump whilst the sump is off.

Hopefully it is just the oil strainer, but do NOT drive the car until it is changed, even to the garage. Get it recovered if you can.

Cheers for the tips guys, my mechanic is a close friend, so I'm sure he won't mind me passing on some tips from enthusiasts !
One question though, I have a full warranty with the car, would this be covered in any way?

If you have a full warranty then your mechanic friend should not even be touching it surely? Don't they normally have approved garages they use?

Check the small print as most are not worth the paper they are printed on...... BUT I would think something like this would be covered. They will probably ask you to pay an excess/diagnostic fee before confirming though, so if it is the strainer it'll probably be cheaper to just get your mate to do it...... but that's a big if

He owns a garage, as long as the garage is vat registered the work can be done by them. I'll givethem a call later.

Car is back, sump dropped out & return pipe cleaned, fresh oil & filter too, no claim on the warranty as it wasn't that dear. Return pipe was also the newer type apparently too.

So next on my list is fresh tyres, then pipewerx de cat, then off to R-Tech!

Whatever was blocked was unblocked I thought there was a return pipe, but I didn't see it so I'll stand corrected.

turbo return pipe blocked? that's the only return pipe I can think off

Unlikely, or the car would be throwing oil smoke out of the back rather than suffering a low oil warning.

It can only have been the pickup pipe, thankfully sounds like no damage done

Must've been the pickup pipe, I didn't see what he did, he did drain the oil & remove the sump to clean it though!
