I Need Help! Buying an ED30 Import

Hello again, my second topic since I joined an I'm all take take take, so sorry about that!

I'm looking at an ED30 that really is in lovely conditioning, albeit with a few scuffs and kurbed alloys that the dealer is going to sort or me.  I went back to go through the paperwork today and a few things popped up...

It had a DSG service at 31,000 miles (now at 57,000), 4 years ago.  Does this need to be done imminently? And how much would it likely cost me, if the dealer doesn't want to do it himself?

It's an Import.  Date of first registration, and date of first registration in the UK are the same - it has one original stamp from a german dealer when it left the factory/dealer and was taken straight to the UK. No build number in the car, no spare tyre standard import stuff I believe.  Just a couple of things...

I read somewhere all imports are black?  This one is red?

When you do a car check on it, it comes up as being a "Golf GTI (200)", and does so when geting an insurance quote too.  Is this an error?  The v5 says 230Kw.  The insurance is cheaper than a quote on a UK ED30.

Are imports worth the same as a UK car?  This one is up for top dollar, at £11k and I'm a little bit uneasy paying top dollar for an import.

Your advice is greatly appreciated.

DSG service should be done every 40000 miles according to VW. Should be £179 I think but does vary depending on special offers. Log book should show Golf GTI Edition 30 230 SA for semi automatic. V5 should show 169 KW.

Compare the spec to a UK car. IIRC some imported cars didnt have alarms or immobilisers, the was other differences as well but I can't remember them

There are plenty for under 11k so I wouldn't bother with the hassle with that one.

£11k is at the top of what these are selling for, but this is the cleanest, lowest mileage one I've seen and I specifically want a red 5dr DSG that hasn't been modded - there aren't THAT many of those, and as far as I'm concerned this one isn't really any extra hassle, I just don't want to pay over the odds and lose out when I come to re sell it if imports generally sell for a % less.

Compared to a UK car in the same condition/spec/mileage I'd say it's priced about right, maybe £500 high.

I would say imports are always worth less, personally I wouldn't bother with it. Odd it comes up as a normal Gti. I'd be checking it isn't a standard one which has been made to look like an ED30.

Like someone else said there are loads about in fact a few nice red dsg ones on this forum which have a few small mods which in my opinion make the car better.
You can take a remap off if you really want to.
You have no way of telling if the one you are looking at has been modded in the past.

Price wise I think it's massively overpriced. Most are actually. I'm currently in the market for one and simply not giving in to these crazy asking prices.

For reference I bought mine 5 years ago on its 3rd birthday and 33k miles fully loaded (manual) for £12,000!
So how can a 9 year old one with significantly more miles be even close to that. It's madness. I've almost given up and started to look at golf r's. Much better value in my opinion now.

Don't forget to also keep an eye out for a Pirelli, lot less of them about (just 222 imported into UK), basically the same car, but bespoke interior and in my opinion nicer wheels
Should hold money just as well as ED30 if not better due to numbers.

Good luck with the hunt, don't rush to get one, plenty of ED30's out there to chose from.
I agree that you will never know if it has been modded, this is probably more likely on an ED30/Pirelli than a standard GTi, as the power gains are massive from a simple ECU remap, so why wouldn't you do it?! Completely safe to do a Stg 1 without any damage to car, after all, it is a de-tuned S3 engine

I gave up looking for a ED30 and just ended up with a standard GTI as the ED30's were massively overpriced when I was looking (and some still are). I'm not saying give up but just be patient plenty of them will pop up.

Mine is a Dubai import and I've had no issues with it and it came better spec'd than standard GTIs you get here. Came with a alarm and immobiliser fitted. But I don't plan on selling it now and will keep it for a while yet.
