Satnav DVD, can you back it up?
« on: September 12, 2016, 12:19:13 am »
Hi,

I went on holiday last week and sods law my head unit developed problems reading the satnav DVD which is scratched. I'm not sure whether it's the unit failing which has scratched the DVD and that's the problem or whether it's the DVD itself.

Can I copy my DVD to test if it's the disc that's the problem to rule it out?

Thanks,

Paul

Yeah could maybe try cloning the dvd on a PC if you have the facility to do so.

Depends on what satnav unit you have I guess, as to what you might have to do to hack the security.

With the MFD2 there is an exploit you can burn to cd and run through the system that "unlocks" it so you can play back-up maps.  Newer nav units may require a different approach.

There is likely a way to do it.  You probably aren't allowed to discuss it on here though.  Google it for your specific unit.

The units are fussy on the quality of the DVD so make sure you use a good quality one .

I've had a look at google images and I think that mine is the old MFD2 unit, it's the one which you have to insert the disc into the unit and has the menu buttons across the bottom. Does that make a difference?

You need to make sure you use a quality cd to copy it onto aswell as if its a cheap one they are thinner and get jammed in the unit.

You can burn the cd with the exploit to allow the MFD2 to play back-up dvd's.  You should update the firmware first.  I have done this on my MFD2 unit.  It's a fairly simple procedure.  You need to use dual layer dvd's for the maps, and good quality ones too.  Google how to unlock mfd2, and you should get some easy to follow instructions.  I doubt I'd be allowed to show you on here.

I've had the same problem.... Not that I use the sat Nav that much but comes in handy

One day it just stopped working and said 'please insert VW disc'

It seems to read cd's ok so it's the sat Nav unit. Went to vw and they tried a newer disc which didn't work. He said it was a fault with the unit so I have to buy another one if I want sat Nav which I don't want to do tbh

Let me know if the backup works as I'll try this

They do work, as I am running the latest maps on mine.

But if your NAV part isn't running, I can't see how it would fix that.  But it should only cost you a cdr and dvd-r dl to try it.  And some bandwidth.

I'll update this when I get around to investigating it, I've had a busy week so I haven't done anything with it yet.
