First Mk5 gti purchase
« on: September 24, 2016, 09:15:52 am »
Hi guys, long time shadow lurker now possibly looking to buy shortly.
I am looking at a daily driver and wanting to ask about modifications and reliability. Ideally would like an Edition 30, but wanting to ask the longevity of going stage 2 or 2+? I know stage 1 will go to around 270-300bhp or so dependant on whether its BYD. I have seen a couple of cars for sale at a quoted 350 bhp and genuinely would like peoples opinion on the long term reliability of the tfsi engine at that power. Also concerned about possibly devalueing an edition 30 in coming years by taking it too far away from standard.
Also mpg on a steady run on the motorway? I currently run a remapped 140bhp 08 Skoda Fabia Sport tdi which is quite nippy and driven quite hard gives me an indicated average of 52mpg. Wondering what i could expect on a 75mph cruise to work taking it steady?
Many thanks folks

Testament to these cars here. Look after them and they look after you. Nearly 100k at stage 2 tune.
My pirelli is at 90k nearly and it's 2+ with WMI etc and I track it a few times a year and drive it very hard and it's absolutely perfect. It has also been mapped stage 2 since about 60k. Can't comment at a 75mph run mpg as I don't do long journeys in mine very often that's for the the girlfriends car . I did a good 50 mile each way run the other day and managed 36/37 mpg average so even at a high state of tune they are still pretty good. I have seen up to 43mpg average before as well.

Mpg.

Stg 2 eddy with loba hpfp and RS4 rv.

At least 2 runs per month of >6 hrs on 90% motorway, gives me a regular 30 mpg at 70_75 mph, perhaps 32 max. I use cruise control a lot, and that helps better mpg.
Hoofing it, and mpg will drop VERY drastically!

Durabilty- like any machine, good maintenance, and operating procedures will give benefits.
Ie change oil frequently, and don't shut down when very hot. Idle to cool down and minimise heat soak.

MPG?

My almost stock ED30 gives me roughly 32mpg, sitting on cruise at ~75mph on my way to work (around 50 miles each way, just outside of rush-hour leaving around 9am).  I must admit though, this is usually travelling a relatively busy road, so it isn't straight cruise all the way.  There is a bit of slowing down for traffic, but not too much.  And that is door to door too, so includes about 10 miles of 2-way A-road, and going through one small-ish town (so one set of traffic lights and a couple of roundabouts).  For a straight, several hours of night-time driving or quiet daytime driving, I would expect a little more, maybe around 35 or so.

BUT, my average so far (albeit over only 2 tanks so far), is around 28 mpg.

If you click the banner, it takes you to my page, where it should be easy to see my other cars (if you click my name, xs2man, where it says property of, you can see all my current cars, as well as the stats on my "retired" cars, so you can see how my average consumption compares to the averages for these cars.  Since mpg figures are hugely dependent on driving style).  My 2013 530d which averaged ~40mpg over 46k, and my 2.0 TDI Alhambra, which averaged also around ~40 mpg over 10k (so far).  To give you an idea of my driving styles (pretty good average on the BMW, probably average for the Alhambra, which is also mapped).

My ed30 at stage 1 will see prob around 22 around town and 32 max on motorway journey but all depends on how heavy your right foot is. Can't comment on longevity personally as my car is only on 33000 miles but I understand they are very strong engines.
