My old pride n joy



I had the want for a petrol gti for a while now, and thought I would treat my self to an early Christmas present,

A tornado red edition 30,
Found this one fairly local to me and fell in love, it needs a bit of tlc but drives absolutely spot on, and has full history which was important to me,

Jobs to do,
Paint correction,
Refurb the wheels,
High level brake light isn't working,

Not looking to heavily modify this, think my plans inc 40mm h&r springs, and a miltek exhaust,

Good luck with yr new purchase a great colour choice of eddie but then thats cause i have 1 myself. I wld suggest u shld deffo get a remap with that engine its mental not too.

Do the hardware before you get the remap. Pointless going Stage 1 and then deciding you want more - any hardware mods will need the appropriate map to get the best out of them. A good turbo back exhaust will bring it to life, and an uprated fuel pump will bump the low-mid torque nicely. Those two mods, then a map, and you're sorted (if you want to keep things subtle).

I can vouch for the H&R springs. Nice drop and decent ride. If I was ever looking at coilovers I'd consider ST, they're basically what Weitec used to be and the set I had on an old car were decent.

However, when it comes to springs H&R are tried and tested, whereas ST/KW springs would be more of an experiment - you just don't know how the car's going to sit, and once they're on there's no adjustment. By all means try them though. They might be good.

They're all good as long as your dampers aren't shot. When I fitted mine (on standard dampers) I could barely tell the difference.

They will wear the dampers faster than standard springs, purely down to the reduced travel making the dampers work under more compression, but that'd be exactly the same case as any spring that dropped the car 30mm.

The main consideration for me was how it sat, and I'm happy with it. In the future there are plenty of options for fitting new uprated/shorter dampers that will work even better with shorter springs like the H&Rs.
